bit of a back story, I had Half Life 2 then got the Orange Box for my Birthday so I had a nice free gift to give to a mate.
I sent it to him, he downloaded it and then it asks for a product key, I give him my HalfLife one which doesnt work then my Orange Box one which doesn't work

Who's being the idiot here, me, my friend or Steam?

hm, did isnt there somethign you have to do in steam like mabye if you uninstall the hl2 or somethign like that? not positive. but i remember seeing something on steam about product keys and stuff

I don't think Steam was supposed to even ask him for a serial key if it was already previously verified on your account.

I did this when I got the Orange box.

Basically Steam picked up that I already had a copy of HL2 and offered me the option to "Gift" it to a friend. I filled in the gift form and Steam emailed the relevant code to my mate and I posted him the media and that was it.
