Defrag not working
Anyone got any idea why Windows 7 defrag has stopped working? I get the busy cursor for a fraction of a second, then nothing... no error message.... nothing... just doesn't work.
Googling has turned up stuff about XP and Vista problems with defrag, but nothing for Win 7. I know I can... and indeed do use a third party app, but that's not the point... I don't like to keep things broken. Talking of which, I have uninstalled 3rd party defrag software... made no difference.

Nope... nothing.
It just returns to a prompt without doing anything

I've heard the Windows 7 Defrag is much better than Vista but unless the Auslogics one isn't supported then your wasting time with the in built defrag

Google Defraggler and give that a go.
If you're keen on the inbuilt Windows defrag check that the necessary services are running - I used to run a very minimised services startup to improve boot time, however I couldn't defrag because the relevant service was not loaded automatically. Hope this helps. Cleggy.

I tried the CMD line you posted... nothing
![]() I'm using defraggler at the moment, and it seems OK. I would just like to get Win7's working again. Clearly I have files missing, but I have no idea how to find out what needs to be replaced.

I used Auslogic's defragger, but after defragging, and optimising, my machine refused to boot.... so I'm not using that again. I'll stick with defraggler I think.
Does anyone know what files constitute the win7 defrag process? If so, I can hopefully get the files from my wife's computer. I don't want to re-install windows... or even repair it using the install disk as it will no doubt mess something up.

thats what I use. totally replaces the windows defragger in the OS. Very nice and has options to defrag in different ways.

Have you ever tried Auslogics Disk Defrag?
I don't know if it's already compatible with Windows 7 but this OS is now out for a while so I think they have made an upgrade to this software. Last edited by Aya Park; 10th Nov 2009 at 09:07. |

See post 10 O&O looks good... but I'm not paying for a defrag util when there are so many free ones around.
