Why don't actually get the amount of storage advertised?
I knot it's due to the formatted capacity but I think it's wrong how they advertise a 1TB drive but you can only put say 930GB, it's just completely stupid!! They should cater for this so you actually get what you pay for.

I agree with you there actually it is annoying when they advertise space you can't actually use. Sounds like my 1tb abit luckyer than yours as I can use 960GB of it.

The issue is that windows works in powers of 2 rather than 10, so 1 terabyte according to windows =1024^3=1.074 of the terabytes stated by hard drive manufacturers (giving 931GiB for 1TB). It's not that the space can't be used, it's just that the units are different. It might be less misleading for windows to state things explicitly in terms of gibibytes rather than gigabytes.

It's not Windows fault, as suggested sb1991.
It's drive manufactures rounding things for the mainstream consumer who would see a big number with a very long decimal number as complicated. Computers are using base 2 in measuring due to their nature (binary). We, humans, like to use base 10 (except the U.S measurement system), as it's easier for us. As much as base 10 system is easier for us, it's easier for a computer to use base 2. Another reason why you don't get the advertise size, is that you need to exclude the index table size (your HDD is a tiny bit smaller if you use a 64-bit OS as the addresses are 64-bit long and no longer 32-bit long), and you have the format settings.

Yep, confirm that hard drives operate in 10's... 1TB = 1000GB instead of 1024GB like it should be.

There's no misinformation from manufacturers. They've got it right, it's Microsoft operating in gibibytes that reduced the shown capacity.

no microsoft are using old school GB when a GB was in fact 1024 MB in computer speak, GiB MiB TiB are relativly new, have only been about since 2000, and have recently been brought in in EU law (2007).
1024MB has been replaced with 1024MiB, etc. the americans haven't converted as yet. the reason for the MiB and MB sepreration is the confusion end users have in understanding computers using base 2 instead of base10. blame hard drive manufacturers who would use base 10 when quoting capacities instead of base 2. |

no, Microsoft, like Linux and Mac OS, shows the same values. it's the hard drive manufacture.
