dvi vga hdmi display port?

Is there any noticable difference between these connections on the performance of monitor output?

DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort are digital connections so will look better on screen than VGA. Also, the digital ones support higher resolutions than VGA which is analogue. I think, in general, if you have all of the above, you should go for DVI or DisplayPort.

Don't some graphics cards also pass sound over HDMI?

Yeah, AMD 5000 series and above can, and I'm pretty sure nVidia 200 series and above can. Not sure if the nVid cards need a spdif connector from the motherboard to do audio pass through though.

VGA has no resolution limits, but you lose quality at higher the resolution rate, unless you increase the Hz (if the monitor supports it). As it's analogue it also gets interference on a non-well shielded VGA cable.

VGA should only be used for analogue based devices. If you use to a digital system like an LCD, then what happens is that the signal is converted from digital to analogue with the GPU, and the monitor grabs the VGA signal, and converted back to digital. Conversion reduces image quality.

HDMI is designed for TV's. It doesn't have any system to assure accurate color reproduction, and it's max length wire is short. Longer HDMI wires requires to be of higher quality grade.
Heavy royalty fees are applied on the wire and on the device that uses HDMI.
HDMI can be converted to DVI.

DVI, is digital.

Display Port supports a higher resolution than DVI and HDMI. Display Port also can carry audio, and something else. BY something else, it means... what ever the manufacture wants.. USB, firewire, PCI-E, thunderbolt (that is why thunderbolt outputs the GPU image... it's not magic tricks from Intel... it's just Display Port with thunderbolt support... so nothing impressive). Also support more colors (for supported displays and GPUs). In addition, Display Port 1.2 (require supported GPU and monitor, which don't exists yet), allows daisy chaining up to 4 monitors at 1920x1200 (and more at lower resolutions) from 1 port of the GPU.

Display Port is backward compatible with a simple inexpensive small adapter down to HDMI and DVI. Display Port is set to replace DVI.

Check wikipedia page for each format if you are interested in the technical details... but in summary, it's mentioned above

+1, i wasn't aware display port was such a nice port, cheers!

Yep, nVidia 2xx cards need a spdif. The 400 series sorted this out.
