VPN issues

I know this is probably a really obscure question but it's causing me a lot of problems and my uni computer services department are worse than useless.

I'm trying to install a program (pro engineer) on my pc at home, running win 7 64-bit.
In order to install it I'm meant to connect via VPN and hit install, the license file is then located by the program and it installs, it's a similar arrangement for running the program afterwards.

I've installed it on this computer before and it worked fine, I've recently upgraded to an SSD and as far as I'm aware that's the only thing that's changed, but the installation process seems to disconnect me from the internet and then fails to find the license file.

What do? At the moment I'm definitely not torrenting a cracked version out of rage at the lack of reply from my uni's computer department.

thanks
