Immortal headphones

Well, I have my sony mdr xb500's which I love to death. I've blasted them 100% on my rig for quite some time now never had these headphones bottom out or distort in anyway(: But my friend picked up a set of klipsch promedia 2.1's and I plugged my headphones in and was BLOWN AWAY at how loud they'll push my headphones. At about 50% The headphones literally vibrate and makes your vision blurry basically before these headphones distort they make your ears HURT. But my question is, will I push them to far if I where to keep going? I feel like I could short them out but they just play more and more aggressively its amazing..

Serious question - Why do you want headphones to be that loud?

Loudness is not the same thing as fidelity, and in the long term all you're doing is killing the potential fidelity of any set of headphones you ever listen to in the future by ruining your ears.

What good are 'immortal' headphones if you destroy your hearing?

Jesus Christ!

Do you seriously have music that loud? If it has to be hearing-damagingly loud then you are doing it wrong, so very very wrong.

You need a better headphone amp. I guess you're driving them from your soundcard? Get a proper amp and save your hearing - once it's gone, it's gone.

Don't damage your hearing, having even mild tinnitus really is no fun.

Sounds like hearing damage has already been done.

Not to be rude or anything but it's straight up idiocy by the sound of it (pun intended).

I have partial deafness in both of my ears because of an accident with headphones - It's a bit silly that you are voluntarily doing that to yourself! (shot gun mic + irresponsible techie + loud noise + DT100's)

I'm not sure if you are familiar with how the ear works - but sound is basically picked up my a huge number of small hairs in your ear, each band of these hairs is responsible for picking up different frequencies - if these hairs become damaged, they then stop working - they dont ever grow back or repair - so once they are dead, you don't get to hear that frequency again. Simple.

You can also seriously bugger up your headphones driving them like crazy from a source that doesnt actually have enough power.

I agree that made no sense. It was supposed to refer to the Darwin/stupidity/survival of the fittest thing, but I realise that the protagonist needs to die (or be sterilised) for this to apply, not just deafen him/herself.

Maybe Krikkit was making a joke due to the 11th setting deafening/killing whoever listens due to loudness?

Edit: Ninjad by the very man I was on about

I can see that it could be interesting to see just how loud you can push your headphones to be before they distort or explode

But please dont use them that loudly on a day to day basis, you really risk permenant damage

At what point though does a pair of heavily over-driven headphones become a pair of really crappy mini speakers?

If you want to make your head explode just fashion a device that holds a pair of studio monitors to your ears and enjoy the pain.

I thought he was making a subtle Spinal Tap joke but then again it could have been a more straightforward deafness joke.

Either way I smiled.
