Noob overclocking question

Having seen your article on how to overclock an i5-3570k I decided to try overclocking for the first time. All seems well but there are some things I am not sure of.

When I run Prime95 my core temperature gets to around 70 C after a minute or two and I'm not sure if this is ok. I have an Arctic Freezer 13 cooler. and my case is well ventilated. I realise that the machine is unlikely to hit this cpu usage for the forseeable future and the base level when web browsing and such seems to be around 31 C

I'm also not sure what my TjMax should be - Core temp says 105 C but I can't find it on the intel site.

thanks in advance

70C is actually ok as long as your OC is reasonable high. If your only at 4Ghz and your hitting 70C then you might have an issue.

With a more modern cooler you could perhaps expect to shave around 5-10°C off those load temps. The Freezer is an awesome cooler for the money still but it is not the most effective in these times of high heat density quads.

Is it the Freezer 13 or the Freezer 13 Pro you've got? If the former, I'd recommend something more beefy. Like the 13's bigger brother the i30.

TJMax is indeed 105C, you'll experience throttling before then though to try and keep it cool.

I vote for moving this to hardware/tech support, so OP gets more help

Can anyone please tell me if this article is in the latest edition of the mag? I have just got an i5-3750K and am eager to OC too!

Thanks all for the responses. In answer to your questions

The OC is hitting 4.2Ghz under prime 95 according to core temp, though the article seems to suggest it could or should be higher, though I would be very happy with 4.2Ghz

The cooler is the standard freezer 13 not the the pro version I read about the i30 just after I got this one

Its in the August 2012 edition (107)

I don't really overload it much at the moment to be honest but I know that over time I will more than likely start running apps that will make much more intensive use of the cpu - e.g video encoding/editing and I just want to make sure I don't do any harm.

thanks again

Thanks elwoos for confirming the magazine issue number. As of a note I have started a thread in the hardware section asking bout CPU temps on relation to the i5 3570k do might be worth keeping an eye out over there also
