System shuts down during idle
Just finished a new build with the following specs:
Intel Core i5-3570 Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H mobo 8 gigs of ram Corsair Pro Series HX 650 PSU EVGA GeForce GTX 670 128 GB Crucial SSD 2 TB Samsung HDD Corsair Carbide Series 500R case Arctic Cooling CPU cooler Everything seems to be working well except the system shuts down if I leave it idle for more than 30 minutes or so. When I come back I find that the system has shut down (not just asleep. When I turn it on I get a message that says Windows failed to shut down properly). I don't have any problems during heavy use (gaming), which leads me to believe it's not a heat issue. Any idea why that might be? |

It sounds like it's trying to go into either sleep or hibernate (or on Win7, hybrid sleep), but it's crashing during the process. You should be able to fix it by making sure your motherboard drivers are up to date (here's the one you want for your mobo). If that doesn't work, you'll have to switch off power saving, or at least try turning off hibernate etc. (instructions, the hibernate bit is in the advanced settings)

Well, I tried that and it seemed to be working well, but today after idling for most of the day the computer shut off again, and now it won't boot. I hit the power switch (both on the case and on the mobo itself) and it starts to power on (fans and lights come on) but after maybe a second it turns off again. This happened before once but I was able to get it to boot by holding the power button for several seconds. That isn't working now. Is this some kind of short? I'm not getting any beeps, and I tried switching to the backup BIOS but nothing seems to fix the problem.

Yes I had the same problem. I fixed it by changing my bios settings. Unfortunately I can't remember what settings as it was last year and I'm currently on the iPad.
But bios settings is the way to fix this. Edit: as for your current problem with switching on machine. Try resetting your bios to default. Usually the moving of a pin on mb. Read your mb manual for guidance.

Check if a BIOS update is available for the mobo? And also if you're using the latest drivers for your graphics card.
Those two are a common causes of a computer not sleeping.
