Wireless adapter not showing up

I tried installing a wireless N usb stick on a windows 7 64 bit laptop, and it only installs the driver, not the utility. It's also using it's default wireless adapter that's built in. Do I have to disable the built in one, for the system to start using the new one I've plugged in? Any help appreciated.
-Greg

Can you see the adapter in device manager? Also see if it's available the network connection screen (Start>Control Panel>Network And Sharing Centre>Manage network adapters (left hand pane).

If it's there right click the bult in adapter and choose disconnect, then right click the new adapter and choose connect. That should bring up the list of available wireless networks that you can connect to.

You could disable the built in adapter in device manager or change the priority of the adapter in the advanced section of the manage network adapters window so that the usb device is primary adapter. Hope this helps

Try checking the manufacturer's website for drivers/utilities, I know with the USB adapter I'm currently using I had to go get the correct drivers myself as windows didn't seem to install the correct ones. Also yes the internal one should be off.
