Aztec blocks are decent enough quality but canti brakes aren't great at the best of times to be honest (especially in the wet). They are the worst to set up well but should be enough once set up properly, toeing in the pads will get rid of the squealing. Cleaning the rims once in a while will help with braking, just wipe a small bit and you'll see how much crap it collects up :P

Exactly what fix-the-spade with the helitape.

Also I bought some Aztec blocks for my cantilever brakes. They squeal so loud people can hear me coming from from 100 yards away. And they seem to be almost useless in very wet conditions. Does anyone recommend better pads for cantilevers, or is there something I can do? I tried to retrofit some v-brake pads with limited success (they have different diameter rods).

You're such a tease Malvolio....

I'm not worried about that, more wear rates than anything else.

They're using abrasive coatings on the disc, so the pads will wear faster just like on Steel discs, my worry is that they'll eat pads. Even with a 'hard wearing' set up my record is two sets of pads in one particularly foul day of racing at Cannock Chase, with abrasive discs I could see that becoming a set every other run.

I've only seen discs bend when they were hit really hard or the owner has done something daft (like dip the bike in a stream to cool them down).

If what they've come up with works then good luck to them.

Nice Pinnacle.

There is one where I work that was dropped in by a customer for a service. He's run it completely into the ground in 18 months of ownership, Reba forks totally seized, crankset and BB destroyed, hubs on both wheels possibly beyond rescue among a fairly long list of issues. His response? "Oh well, I thought it might be beyond saving." Not sure he's going to bother picking it up.

I'm quite tempted by a pinnacle road bike. They seem fairly decent. It's that or a boardman for value it seems.

The specialised and trek models seem to be a bit less spec'd in the same price range.

Oh choices!

OK sorry for the double post. But this is unrelated.

I can no longer get a garage, so I need to work out the best way to store two bikes in an area that is:

155cm by 144cm by 235cm. I am after efficiency as it is my entrance hallway, and I will be putting in some wardrobes as well that will be taking up 100x50cm of that wall space.

Do any of you have clever bike storage that you could put a pic of?

Cheers

Some of these might be hilarious prices, but there's bound to be something that will suit.

The pinnacles are good IMO, if you can stand the stigma of buying an "own brand" bike - same with boardman (halfords). But you always get a huge amount of spec for the money - I got 100 quid free accessories with my bike too as it was a pinnacle. Frame is made by kinetic bikes I think, but is not bad at all.

I say do it! Or get a "named" brand and get lesser specced group set etc. when the warranty is up on the frame I will probably rebuild with another frame, but until that time I'm just going to enjoy it!

The Book Bike is food for thought, as I will be buying an Ikea wardrobe to go there, and I could just put a normal vertical bike stand into one of the wardrobes.

Lovely thing the BookBike, but the price is somewhat insane...

€2685

I like the Bike Valet, which is a much more reasonable $140ish shipped.

The book bike is just a set of shelves with a bike wall hook in it. Those you can get in halfords for 15 a pop. And I can just put the bike inside the same ikea wardrobe as the rest.

True - another option to consider is grabbing a pair of guitar hooks, they're nice and soft and cheap (I got two for 10 recently).

Respray the frame and be sure to mask the little Evans sticker.

I now use one of these (125ish)

I really wish I could use that double rack its what I originally wanted, but the spot I have is only 144cm so I would have about 20-30cm sticking out into the entrance next to the stairs.

The missus is getting a bit grumpy about the concept of two bikes there, especially when she didn't want one there.

I'm looking for some miscellaneous advice in the lead up to xmas.

I need a helm, something reasonably priced (50 quid or thereabouts), and shamefully, I haven't used one for years, so I have no idea what to go for. I ride daily on road and weekends on trails, if that makes a difference.

Secondly, I'd like a general knowledge bike maintenance type manual. Something I can refer to no matter what I need to fix, possibly with illustrations.

Thirdly, a bike specific tool-set as I've lost of misplaced most of my kit after I moved to Denmark years ago and have just been borrowing the brother-in-laws ever since. Any that are reasonably priced - again - that will allow me to do all basic and more advanced maintenance on my own?

Cheers!
