Do you know of anywhere that would stock those wires (in the UK)?

Tap point is the mark where you can tap for power or utility on a PCB board. In the diagram"LED FADER 360" you can see the tap point, its the circle with a TP and number *example: TP404*.

I am not an engineer so I honestly do not know why MS made TP so easy to find but it is very useful.

As for the wiring I would say any computer part store. I living in the United State :/ But you might be able to Ebay the power switch for PC. I know those wire comes from old PC case and front face panel.

just need to find a power led one now, I will be using an ssd so the hdd led isn't as crucial (if it doesn't boot then there is obviously something wrong)

well first things first the power switch. Remember the diagram on how to solder wires to the tact switch. if the TP (tap point) in the back doesn't work to turning on your PC then solder the wire straight to the tact switch. The lights can come later when you got the power switch working properly

Looks reasonable. I'd get a proper soldering station if you're planning to continue with electronics , etc. Something like an Atten 938D is a low cost entry level station.

I considered getting a proper station but I am going to uni this year (hopefully) to do electronic engineering so there will be proper soldering equipment there i'm sure.

There are proper stations at my uni as well. Nothing beats the freedom being able to do it in your own room though.

Yep I have to agree with Tangster proper station is adequate for the job you just need the proper size pencil tip to do the job.

Once you have the wire to the power in place we can begin test it out to see if the tap point is the proper one. If I still had a power board I would assist you more I am sorry for that :/ But we must do what we can with what we have. If anything I will see if I can find a better tap point for the power.

Ok, I will be ordering the final parts for the build and the soldering iron sometime next week so when it all arrives I can start . Is the solder station that tangster posted the best for a beginner then?

The best? No (I'd go for a Hakko FX-888 if you wanted the best hobby station). But it is excellent value.

BTW, I live just outside York. I currently study in Liverpool.

I wouldn't say it is a true beginner friendly. But it is of good build value. I think for very true beginner a very simplistic build works well.. like this


I used to work in class with This all the time though and I did okie. The test was finding the "sweet" spot the correct heating spot which was sometime tricky. Which is why I like the one's with digital display makes finding the right temp easy as Pi

Looks like an Aoyue 937 OEM to me. Have the Aoyue 950 arriving this week. Excited.
The Atten and Aoyue sub 100 models are all pretty similar imo, add/remove digital readout, change the chassis, add a solder holder pretty much all decent, easy to use and fairly small. I think they share tips as well.

Yep that's the great thing that is the main reason why I like this solder station. Hakko, aoyue and atten they share the same 900M-T soldering tips which is great since they will be easier to find and easier to replace. They are commonly used and the one I linked: YiHua 937D comes with SMD tip and I can not say how useful that is, it something I look for since I repair a lot of electronics.

I should be saving up to buy myself a proper station but I set out a goal for myself and I mean to keep on my goal. Once I finish with what I am after I will then go ahead and save up for a good proper soldering station
