LAN-Can - First build
Hello community and greetings from Finland!

First post and first build too, I have build many computers to stock cases and modified few. Nothing serious so far, here is few pictures of my latest HTPC-case:




Hardware:
Coolermaster Elite 120 Advanced
i5-3570k + Antec Kuhler 920
Asus P8H77-I
G.Skill 1600 4Gb
OZC 60Gb Vertex 3

Sleeved the PSU (first time), not happy with it. I didn't open the connectors, just cutted the wire -> sleeve -> shrink tube -> solder. I took about 25cm off from every wire. All cables will be sleeved eventually.

Color is from Harley-Davidson color chart, some pearl variant.
This case is still on hold, the front panel plastic "leaked" black color to base and final coat. I think the plastic primer did not do the job it was meant to do.

Now, back to business:

The base of this build was found on my workplace, which imports tools, chemicals and several other stuff. I found 3 old oil cans laying in a dusty compartment above shower room, had to reach out and take a picture of them.

They are dated to 1971-1973, the label says:

Glad to have some info.

Plan is to make, like the title says, a compact portable LAN-case. The handle is ready, all i have to do is squeeze the parts inside.

Here is few pre-plan sketches, i modeled the can with Sketchup:



Must have:
Side window
Water cooling CPU+GPU (have only experience on that Antec 920)

Hardware (planned):
CPU: i-7 3770k
MBO: mATX Asus MAXIMUS V GENE Intel Z77
GPU: 7970/GTX680

All parts will be attached to a rig, which slides out from back.

I planned the base (red) which will be bolted to the bottom of the case:



Slides, which will be used to pull the rig (80's green) out, are still missing from there. First i thought making them myself, but couldn't find a way to make a slide which would slide that 350mm, which is needed to fully extend the rig out. Spotted slides from a kitchen cabinet maker and will use them. Called to a supplier and requested 2D drawings for the slides, they are made by Blum.

Fans will suck the air through bottom, radiator is 60mm thick. Will it be enough for that hardware?

Also, I called to a friend of mine, who works with laser cutters. Told my plan and got response to send drawings once the part plans are complete.

Tomorrow i'm going to crack the can open with Dremel, bought some extra cutting discs today.

I went to workplace and started to cut the can. First I had to mark the cutting lines.

Grinding:



Finished:




It took 4,5 of those Dremel 0.75mm cutting disks to finish the job. I filled the can partially with water to prevent any fumes inside, because it was used to store hydraulic oil. In the heat of the work, i accidentally tipped it over, causing all the water to spill out from the cutted hole. Half of it went to my pants, the other half to floor.

Some progress again, only in design though. Many changes to original layout, removed the reverse layout from "must-have".



I ordered slides from UK, supplier here in Finland didn't have large stock.
Changed the Blum's to Schock Metall. Modeled the slides, they have full extension of 350mm.

I thought of soda blasting the can and re-painting it. Not sure about color theme yet.

I've been designing the watercooling system, trying to fit 2 x 240 rad's behind those slides. Seems impossible at the moment, i think i figure something out.

Looking good. You CAN'T re-paint the can, though. The logo on the side is 90% of the can's charm. Give it a good clear-coating instead.
You can however, paint the insides and around the seams. -Well, you kinda have to.

I'm with cheaps here. This is a great idea and the whole wow factor is the can it's in. You have to find a way to do it without getting rid of the logo. I'm liking this so far though. I'm gonna watch this one.

Just when i thought that i had all worked out, you guys come and trash my plans!

Seriously, i was going to remove the both sides of the can, but you are right. The WOW!-factor of this project is the retro-look of the can. Cutting and painting would ruin it.

Window is staying, it's the "LAN" part of this mod. Or should i then go with sleeper-look, you know like sleeper-cars?
