Just started today, so learnin as i go along, but put the key in for more points...not sure what its all about, but more points sounds good.
1 question, while im folding, my gpu is going up to 89 degree's under full load, is this normal ? Movin to a new case soon with better cooling, so hopfully wont be this hot for long, but is that temp damaging to my gpu ?? |

I have an i5-2500K running at 4.2GHz, with a HD Radeon 5850 GPU at stock speeds. Is there anything (bar heavy OC'ing) I can do to push out a higher PPD than around 6,500?

Is the 6500 PPD between both? As that is very low. The 2500k should net around 15k on its own, I would turn the 5850 off as it is likely draining its resources, using more power and overall providing lower points. AMD cards generally suck at folding.

Will give that a try, thanks.
Will changing to a Nvidia GTX GPU net much better PPD then, say a 560ti 448 for example?

Any Nvidia GPU will net more points than an AMD GPU. They simply work better for what FAH is trying to do.
If you are going to spend cash specifically and solely on folding, CPU power is best if you can afford a new-ish CPU architecture. The higher end chips on socket 1155, 1136 and 2011 are beasts for folding and will churn out far more points for far lower electricity usage. That's a really helpful link, thanks. Looks like an eBay scout around for a GTX 560 ti (448?) is in order.
Although, the newer AMD cards run differently now, has anyone got an average PPD for a new 7800 series card?

The usual advice is to buy the graphics card you want for other applications, and think of folding as a secondary consideration.

Interesting info there. I will turn my clients to fold on 2 CPU cores, my AMD GPU and that should leave 1 core free for casual stuff.
Currently away from my computer and see that my signature says I have scored no points for 2 days... Not good... UPDATE 01-10-12: Setting my V7 client to the above has resulted in a new PPD of 18,000. Result.

Hi folks - was pondering turning off the ati gpu's (11k ppd) and setting the CPU back to 8 threads (I7-975EE with lots of headroom) and going for a Bigadv run, but...I can't see how to do that in V7 - can it still be done?
Cheers. |

![]() tbh i dont think it makes any difference these days as i get so many different WU's with varying PPD you need to get rid of the ATi gpu's and get a Nvidia gpu ![]() my GTX560 none TI gets 12-17k ppd on its own

beside its still the same guide. but the flags dont really work for me.... ive just got a intel duel core cpu that im testing OC'ing ready for adding a gpu to fold on, ive set the max-packet-size to small and it picked up a nice small 85 base point WU, but the second WU it picked up was 1800+ base point WU, which its going to take over 2 days to complete.... so setting that flag has done nothing

ah - it's helped me a bit - didn't know how to set the flags before - regarding the graphics cards - would be lovely to afford an Nvidia card but I've a daughter aged 5, another aged 2 and a 2 month old son....PC is low priority process stream just now
(I inherited the 975 free from a mate who's a CAD guy and was upgrading) I can't say as the flag itself will help, I'm running at 3.75Ghz on 8 threads and getting estimated 17k pts from a 2.2k work unit (24 hrs turnaround) - I will see if I get any interesting units after this one completes- all about trial and error and learning from everyone else

How much PPD would an Intel Xeon 5450 produce? Thinking of building a second system based around 2 of them.
