Don't forget this is noisy out of the box, certainly not HTPC suited unless you perform both the fan and PSU mods...

well, I just ordered a N40L. 100 with HP cashback, 92 if Quidco pays up.

going to be experimenting OS configurations in VMware first.

I thought about doing the same when I first bought mine, but I found the CPU to be a little underpowered and booting ESXI off the a USB drive too slow. But that was my experience, and frankly I had no requirement to run such a setup, I just fancied having ago with a few linux distros installed under EXSI.

this little black box arrived on Friday, got back and had a look at it earlier. liking it

a few more questions:

-where do I stick the power cables if I want to use the space between HDD cage and 5" drive bay?

-any SSD recommendations to go with this?

-or use a large USB stick as OS drive? I see there's an internal USB part if I'm not mistaken? are they reliable?

Can't answer the first two unfortunately but I've heard bad things about using a USB stick as an OS drive as the number of writes to it can kill it off quite quickly...

Not really sure what is the question. You need to add a molex splitter cable to be able to power a device there - if it is a SATA drive then AFAIK one molex->2xSATA power splitter should be enough.

It is a SATA2 interface (with AHCI if you flash the modded BIOS), so choice is up to you.

Yes, there is a internal USB port, and if the USB stick is right for the job ? It depends on the intended use. If you wish to run Windows or full Linux OS on it, i would say no, it's a bad idea. For FreeNAS or as a ESXi boot drive (non-data) it is probably OK to use.

I have a 60gb SSD and it is connected to the SATA2 interface.

Is it ok if I don't update the BIOS (to enable AHCI) as I am not really confident about doing that?

If you don't flash the modded BIOS then your SSD (connected to the separate SATA port on the board) runs in IDE mode, that's all. The removable bays work in AHCI/RAID mode.

The 4 HDD bays seems to have its power connected to the PSU very inefficiently by using 4 molex connectors. Those cables are using up the space behind the HP light, where I was planning to stick a drive.

So planning to order the following:
single stick 4GB kingston memory to make 6GB.
WHS 2011
SATA power splitter cable

looks good?

Yup, that should do it. If i am correct, i bought exactly that RAM module (KTH-PL313E/4G) to the 4GB Samsung i got in my N40L, it works fine. OS is up to you.

Maybe a stupid question, but why don't you use the 5.25" bay for the 5th drive, in some silencer enclosure ? It's not like there is more SATA ports in N40L (unless you plan to route the eSATA port back inside, or add an additional card which would add extra SATA ports).

hum, good point. I should just sellotape the drive in the ODD bay for now. and think about it in the future when I need to expand.

Check if the supplied memory is ECC or not. because ECC and non ECC do not work together. If you buy ECC memory make sure its not also registered. the Micro server can use regular RAM or ECC, non-registered RAM.

I would skip the OS and use one of the Linux based distros or recycle an old PC license (i.e. from a PC/laptop you no longer use windows on).

well, parts cancelled by ebuyer, what's with the obsession to require ID verification these days. :grrrr:

manual said it's ECC RAM, so I'll be going with that. That RAM stick linked above also looks like ECC non-registered.

Which Linux server distro would you recommend?
