Who is your favourite developer? Do you worship Rockstar for all things GTA, or perhaps Ubisoft Montreal and their Splinter Cell series? id Software vs Epic? Would anyone dare vote for 3D Realms?

I'm pretty old school, so I have a soft spot for all things id Software tbh. I like what Cro Team have done with the Serious Sam series, and I have my fingers crossed for the boys at GSC with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I guess lots of people will vote for Vave, naturally, and the RTS guys will all vote for Blizzard...

Oh, and if I'm allowed stray from PC stuff onto Xbox, DEFINITELY the lads at Bizarre Creations, producers of Metropolis Street Racer for Dreamcast and two Project Gotham Racings on Xbox - can't wait for the third one on Xbox 360 boys!

That's incredible work by Rockstar considering EA are literally buying the industry, working people to death in conditions little better than slave labour (they get paid) and all are buying the rights to everything these days.
Im also an old skool boy and i like Id's stuff too, but i gotta admit i love Ubi's stuff like FarCry and SCCT and you cant forget Valve for making a huge name for themselves with just 2 games.
But what annoys me is that we see very few Jap games hit the US/EU markets. There are LOADS of GC and PS2 titles that we never, ever see that would be really fun to play. I dont care if it's original language, just subtitle it! I love the Resident Evil series and to the guys who made RE4 - absoutely fantastic job.

Ubi are makers of good games but at the moment im in the process of considering a hate campaign as they are not planning on releasing the next TomClancy Ravensheild on anything but the console which is very annoying. Something to do with the fact that once you release a console game the bugs arn't going to be ever corrected but on a pc the patchs are needed. I think its a sad day when a publisher refuses to produce pc games because it might cost them more when there are problems found they have to patch.

My favourite was Westwood Studios till EA bought them out and then ruined the C&C series with Generals. Wonder if we will ever get to see Tiberian Dusk but since the end of Westwood I doubt it.

If you don't like EA as a company (and I don't, they have awful support), then don't buy EA games.

I have to be honest, I pay absolutely no attention to who's written the game..

Fair enough Kna - I guess that makes you a little more mainstream than some... I'm a bit of a film buff, so I see films based on director, writer etc whereas most people go for story / actor. So I guess that means you are only bothered about the type of game and whether it scores well in reviews?

Absolutely, for example.. I had (and still have) no idea who makes Far Cry. There goes my credibility.

In the interests of discussion, does it mean then that if people go for games based on the writers and not the game, a company can literally roll out any old crap and people will buy it anyway? Look at Doom 3.

For me, reviews and plot generally sell the game enough not to worry about who's put it together and, to use the film analogy, I've seen some real rubbish from acclaimed directors and some astounding work from relative unknowns. I think the same holds very true with Games.

Doom3 may have been crap, game wise, but the engine potential is incredible. When you get future games based on the D3 engine you know theyll be good.

I spose you are right about some movies by unknown directors often being better. Look at how Tarantino is going - from cult to crap.

I really should get around to playing Doom3 - from the little I played last year, I wouldn't say it was "crap". But then I seem to be in the minority in prepared to look at it objectively

Doom3 has an awsome engine and some good features like the little messages you keep picking up that remind you that the zombies your blasting were once real people. But this feature was implamented in AVP2 which I have to say is far more indepth and fun to play... One of the things I rearly like about doom3 is the interface between the controll panles in the game which is a much better way than pointing at stuff and pressing "E". I think Doom3 would have been far better with co-op multiplayer for upto 8 players with auto adjusting difficulty and one player as a master player who can save the game.... I mean in the xbox version they had co-op with two player and they have a network component, how hard can it be!

As for cult films all I have to say is watch Donnie Darko

Hmmm, tough choice. I would probably say Rockstar North (or DMA Design as they were known way back) actually, I'm a crazy-go-happy fan of the GTA series.

Also love games from:
Konami
UGA (Rez is delicious)
Nintendo
Rare (post-Ultimate Play the Game and pre-Microsoft)
Squaresoft (not so much newer Square Enix stuff)

I could go on and on. I love going on about developers
