broken link

the link in the article is broken, http://http//www.ps2nfo.com/ will eventually redirect to microsoft. perhaps you meant http://www.ps2nfo.com/?

interesting to see its been cracked though, im still hoping sony will release some sort of home-enthusiast software, even a port of yabasic would be nice.

--

on an unrelated note, i notice the forums are auto-tagging what looks like a url now, must find a way to turn that off.

To me, if I buy a peice of hardware, I should have the right to install/write any program to run on it... Pirating's another matter for another discussion. If Sony decide's to sell a piece of hardware at a loss, then thats their problem, they can't make me buy games for it in the first place. I could in thoery just play game demos, which are free with many magazines. If for example I want to install linux on my psp, I should have a right to do so, If I want to play films which I have purchased on dvd on my psp, then I should have the right to do so.

I fully understand why they should want to sell their hardware at a loss. But that has nothing to do with me, the price they sell their goods is sollelly their responsabillity. But the software that runs on MY psp should be MY choice, and my choice alone. Companies should not have the right to decide what a user does with hardware that they SOLD and is no longer in their possesion. If they want that right, they should rent out their hardware at say £5 a month and keep that hardware in their possesion and not sell it on.

sorry about the rant, but I feel greatly against companies feeling they have the right to govern what happens to something they have sold.

Woohoo, time to buy a PSP then. 3rd party software usually kicks the crap out of normal stuff they bundled with it, so you will probably get full internet support and whatever else the PSP is capable of on it in the future. That's what has made xbox mod chips so great - they can make it do sooo much more.
Not that i condone cracking the software for warez, that's bad and doesnt get games developers any money.

Out of interest, what has sony got to lose, theyve already sold you the console. THe worst that I can see hapening at the moment, is someone killing their unit, and having to replace (which would benifit sony, cos it would most likely be out of waranyt)

Basically people can now use it to rip UMD disks to the net, then distribute them over p2p so people put the downloaded content onto high capacity memory sticks and play the games off that.
If companies dont think they will make money by making games for the psp then Sony loose contracts with games developers, which then hits Sonys sales. It's a downward spiral.

Actually, the PSP isn't much different from any other high-powered cutting-edge console in that regard: the hardware is sold at minimal profit or even at a loss - everyone knows Xboxes have been sold for a loss since the start - in order to establish a userbase. The platform-holder, in this case Sony, then takes a royalty fee for every game sold, which is where they make their money.

So just as mobile phones are given away for "free" which profit clawed back through calls, Sony will make NO money (or possibly even lose money) if they only sell a bunch of PSPs and everyone downloads the ROMs and plays for free. However, I doubt this will become a widespread issue: piracy has existed on every console since we moved away from carts, and on the PC since the year dot. As long as it is kept to a minority of tech-savvy users, it won't impact the bottom line.

No biggie, same thing happened with the Gameboy (sort of) Where you can download roms and put them on empty cartriges. Almost every game console that came out got hacked. lol

This has always been a topic for debate.

Companies will come out with new technology, and there always is an underground waiting to reverse it. How do you think new technology is born?

Take owning a home for example: When you buy/lease a home, you are free to make whatever mods on your home you wish. Electronics is exactly the same thing.

However, do support game developers by buying their software!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In fact, this type of news would expand the PSP user base.

More people will buy the PSP to do all the nifty hacks and whatnot with it, and people will buy it to play games alone.

Well you get that with movies, effectively.

The only circumstances under which I'd condone (or not discourage, rather) pirating a game is if you actually intend to simply sample the game, but then buy the full version after. The problem is that there's not a great way to try games before paying (I suppose renting them, but that's not free), and then people will pirate intending to pay if they like it but then "oh well, it was OK but not worth paying for really" after it's been played through twice.

That is the problem with our country Firehed, we cannot speculate on intent. How simple would it have been for me to go to a store and tell them I intend to buy HL2 but want to dl it and play it offline.

Simply put, if you grab a game and are impressed, buy the $^@*$ thing

Amen. Unfortunately, there are a lot of cheap @$$ people around. Firehed's right...everyone goes and says "oh, it wasn't worth buying..." after playing the game 2 or 3 times.
