Thanks!
![]() I have a few questions about this. The PPU in my opinion is a great idea (though with all this bussing back and forth, I'm honestly worried about the bridge chips). But Wil, you state in the article that you don't know how many developers are going to come on board to support extra technology that costs $249...Huh!? In this day and age the high-end gamers use chips that cost $800, video cards that cost $400 a piece, etc...all in the name of faster, more realistic gaming. If they bothered to program HDR, why wouldn't they program for this? Companies are a little slow to pick up on it because it is rather new to the world (its functional existance was only really broadcast about 3-4 months ago, if that). I see havoc doing a patch of their physics engine in some of their already released games for this (as well as others) once they really get to know the technology. Either that, or it will be overtaken by Novodex, which can already support SMP technology. Also, it's more than a rumor that Unreal3 is alread on board with this technology, it's broadcast on the PPU maker's website. So they're getting some funding for this little 'project' from Epic and a couple other companies (including Secret Level and Sony)...they're also designing a slightly scaled down version of the Physx chip for the PS3.

Looking at the sample card it seems to have both PCI and PCI-E interfaces on the card. Also how much power with this card consume. By the look of it with the molex connector quite a bit. We may need the 1Kw power supply soon

Death,
They're actually both PCI and PCI-E. So don't worry about that. Seriously, though. How much will you pay for your next GFX card? Because this will rival that in its change to your gaming. We're talking FULLY DEFORMABLE terrain here. Instead of 20-some objects moveable on screen, it will be in the thousands. Instead of graphical bullet holes, there will be genuine holes in objects that can be seen through, widened...or the whole wall can just be blown apart, in chunks that will get left on the floor. Rockets will finally do what they're supposed to. To me, this is a whole new step. Ragdoll is great, but we're limited by the CPU process as to how many things can be involved. We can push a barrel, knock it around...but by the time you have a few objects on the screen that can be moved, you have to nail down all the other ones. That is now changing, and drastically.

I think the physics chip will have a lot to offer in a while when there are games to fully support it. Not sure about the $249 price tag though...
And manufacturers would be fully stupid not to release this on PCI-E as PCI is now technically "legacy"

Sounds too good to be true.
I'm just concerned about the effect to multiplayer games. Slower servers? No multiplayer at all?

Hmmmm...now THAT's an interesting point. A LOT more objects to track over servers. But still, I doubt it would be too much a problem.

And it wasn't spent arguing over Windows piracy!!! ![]() Now how the bloody 'ell am I supposed to change this stupid title by my avatar?

"Interestingly, the unit will be a PCI card, not PCI-Express. According to X-Bit Labs, Asus will be the primary manufacturing partner."
The hell are you talking about... look at the top-right of the card! Anyways, I'll have to see what amazing things the card can do before I drop $250 on one. Sounds very promising, but we'll see.

Eh? 45 past what hour?
![]() Yeah, I'm pretty psyched about these things. Part of the 'plastic' appearance in games to me is that so few of the objects we see actually move. It's like "oh, there's a table with stuff on it!" and then you bump the table, and maybe it moves, but the stuff on it doesn't...and then it's "Oh, object model...right...wonder how many clones?"

Heh yeah, the title sticks for a little while, just wait some time and it'll show up in the user CP.
Yeah, this holds a lot of possibilities.
