I think that the middle slot would be used only if 1 video card is installed. A option for switching back and forth from sli mode

to go around using some type of switching device to go form 16x PCIE to 8x. it look to cost as much as a dimm like card and it is as easy to use as the electronic switching ICs.

Did not know that. That would have pissed me off to no end if I had hooked it up. I run LCD for normal for most stuff, CRT for gaming, and both for photo editing or other tasks that need desktop area.

What's the overall support level for running two cards in non-sli to power up to four monitors? I know some boards can but is it universal to the chipset?

Certainly seems like the logical thought to me.
Trust bigz to think of running SLI'd 6*00s AND an x*00 though
Some people just have too many graphics cards
