Ha ha ha although I'm happy for the programmer I also imagine how guys at Microsoft are feeling. Everyone is trying to get few millions from Microsoft... Big income, big problems. That's the way it works.

Everytime I hear about Microsoft getting sued and paying damages or settlements, I think of the Monorail episode of The Simpsons.

"This court fines you 300 million dollars!"
"Smithers, my wallet's in my left pocket. Oh, and I'll take that statue of Justice in the lobby too."

I'm still astonished by the scale of monetary punishments. Consider this: Microsoft paid this guy $9 million for using his code. Citigroup is paying $2 billion dollars to settle a class-action lawsuit just for being associated with the Enron fiasco. But the Red Cross was fined only $5000 for infecting tens of thousands of people with AIDS and hepatitis. Talk about a sliding scale.

welcome to justice master Ninja!

The person suing microsoft was been rather un-resonable, as the settlement size shows.

red cross were trying to help thouse people, and the people infected wernt american, so no one cared.

Citigroup, well no one likes anyone who's title containes the word "bank".

Myself i think software patents are a travesity in the way their implemented, worse than real patents, which are already in a very bad way. They can be wide an encompasing too much, its often the case you have to patent everything you might possibly want to let people do with your own technology (amazon's cookie for shopping patent, people who invented the cookie should be pissed). But hear a speach by Mr Dyson for his views on patents.
