Avoid compaqs and hp's. Especially low end Hp's!

What sort of budget you got?

Id pick up a dell with a decent warranty tbh, build quality is way ahead of any low end pcworld stuff.

Compaq is the worst of the worst in quality, and are a freaking pain to open to change something. Are you sure you want one? I would avoid them at ALL COST. Go with Acer if you have to too.. at least it was the basics of 'quality' right.

I suggest Dell or Lenovo systems. Of course with Dell.. they aim at all markets... so you do get what you paid for. A ~1k system will be a much better quality than a 200$ one. For better tech support system, and no junk (or minimal (depends on how Dell like your country)), go with Dell Small Business (you don't need to be a buisness to order).

At university, I saw a a Dell XPS M1330, Dell Latitude E6400, Lenovo Thinkpad 12inch, and they all survive with a minor scratch or minor dent.
Dell Inspiron (the older generation.. I don't know how is the current one), survived a fall, but the plastic where it hit cracked, and a peace fall and a small peace fell off.. not bad for an old and low end Dell system.

I've always thought this seemed like a pretty good deal. Can't speak for build quality though but asus is generally decent not sure about there low end laptops however.
Bit over your budget though.

If you really have to go cheap, take a look at Acer Travelmates. Surprisingly good and robust for their price. Same goes for Asus (well, not the lowest end excluding Eee).
