another minimod: icemouse

MY jaw just dropped when I read Japala's original firewheel mod back in January. I had too much stuff going on to try it then, but I knew I wanted to do it.

So here's my version of this mod, but in black with blue lights to coordinate with my rig and desk:

This was a beige OEM Logitech optical mouse, I paid about $12 for it. The red LED was switched for a Bloo Nichia with no loss of tracking. The additional LED lighting the wheel is a Nichia as well. The shell is vinyl dyed black. The extra LED is powered by +5V taken from a point right next to where the cable mates to the circuit board. I removed a small filter cap and installed my LED+resistor in its place.

Note: the above pic is slightly photoshopped to compensate for the typical gamma of a PC monitor. On my monitor at home the original pic looks nice, but most monitor's gamma is messed up, so I lightened the midtones in this pic a little bit. If you feel like complaining, please contact devnull@linear1.org .

Did you smooth out the wheel? I was wondering if it would be slippery to turn it.

Linear, no need to use that hw. in front of the domain anymore. I rearranged my site so one can use metku.net or www.metku.net. Those subdomains doesn't work with every ISP so this had to be done. But hey, Metkumods is the main feature in metku.net so why not dedicate the whole domain for it and not just a subdomain.

ps. thanks for the credits

I followed Japala's giude pretty faithfully. He recommends leaving it unpolished, and that's a good call. The finish on it is pretty much what you get from 220 grit sandpaper--it's smooth and free of imperfections, but matte rather than gloss, and it feels really nice and diffuses the light extremely well.

Lazy, I'll take some inside pics tonight and post them up.

You da man.

I'm really happy with how this one came out, but I have a couple ideas for taking it to the next level. Time to head for the store and buy another victim, I mean mouse...

that there's some sweet work Linear... I took the wussy way out and got the IBM optical mouse from IBM. Comes with a silicone (guessing) wheel that glows blue...

I guess so. I was trying to get a very clear finish on the edges the glowpad I made but I wans't able to. But in the end, the unclear finish did make the pad glow more since it diffuses the light very much.

You know you can buy these ready made for 'bout 20 squidz? Guess that's missing the point though huh? Still, that cryogen lego mouse looked damn sweet!

Bored of my mouse, and considering that funny 'fan-cooled' mod. Anybody got some other mouse-modding suggestions?

Oh, while I'm here, can you paint a mouse, or do j00 use vinyl dye?

:edit- VINYL DYE!

From the article:
http://www.metku.net/index.html?sect...heel/index_eng

--clip--
I bought a piece of plexi from Aikolon OY. 200 x 200 x 7 mm plate costed 3 euros.

Then I cut a 30 x 30 mm piece and drilled a hole center of it. In that hole I inserted a bolt which I then tightened with two nuts. After that I fastened this contraption to a column drilling machine.

--clip-

Just read those articles and you will learn. It doesn't really matter what kind of transparent material it is as long as it's transparent and you can work it. Plexi, plexiglass and acrylic they are all talking about the same basic stuff with different names and qualities. Other is tough, other is light etc.

wow... talk about thread resurection!!!..

vinyl dye is vinyl dye... you don't list a location so I'll have to do a multinational answer.

In the states the stuff can be kind of hard to find... best bet is a good autoparts store. I got my vinyl dye from Pep boys, they had a good selection. The Plasticote brand is a really good one from my experience.

In the UK, Halfords makes a good one.

It is highly recommended that you clean your bezel first. Any good cleaner will work. I use Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning, it breakes down oils and grease, cleans well, and evaporates real fast. Vinyl dye goes on real thin so any particles/dirt will show up if you don't get it clean first.

Another Logitech,

I have had this one for a while... I just need to re-paint it, I have used it soooo much that it's getting a bit worn on the paint... next time will be with Auto Paint.
