Web Getting into website design

Heya'll,

I could use some advice. I'm wanting to go into website design, primarily to create my own website at first for portifolio purposes.

Where should I start? I've already got a general idea in my head of how the website should look, but I know nothing about how to go about creating it. Pointers to tutorials/guides for newbs etc. would be much appreciated.

I've just started using wordpress.org which puts a nice front end on HTML and is making it quite easy to learn.

 

This is probably the best website to learn basic html, and how to start you on your way.

Agreed with Pieface. W3schools is a great learning resource.

 

W3Schools is all code and while this is probably the most important thing, you'd maybe want to look into Dreamweaver tutorials as well -- thought IMHO you're best going split pane and editing the code from the in built text editor, and using the other pane for site preview.

 

Many thanks to you all for the advice ^_^. I'll investigate the w3 site. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of Dreamweaver anyway, and have yet to acquire one.

Web design goes beyond images and making things look pretty.

Broadly, a good designer will have an appreciation of:

• HTML/CSS/JS
• Form design
• Interaction design
• Usability
• Design skills
• Platform tailored design
• The use of fonts, font styling etc
• Much more that i cant think of!

But yes, a good start is W3C to get the basics on HTML/CSS

 

Small update: got a copy of Dreamweaver \o/.

I'm a webdesigner, and i strongly recommand you to make a wordpress blog. NO, wordpress blog does not have to look like a BLOG, they can be ordinary websites ! take a look at www.templatemonster.com and see some wordpress templates for yourself.

Trust me, you don't want to build a website for yourself from zero, it's like you learn jewlery to make your diamond wedding ring.

 

As I'm a webdesigner too I would recommend starting with something easy like simple HTML+CSS sites instead of using content management systems like wordpress, which are based on PhP and SQL.
