Hope this is in the right place....

A few days ago, a work colleague gave me an xbox360 as he had no use for it anymore as he had a new XBOX one or something, he said that there was a problem with the DVD drive (not opening) and that he has had it chipped.

Now before I go on I must stipulate that I am not going to be using chipped games as you will understand further into this post.

The DVD drive was an easy fix, after giving the 360 a DCOA. It was a broken drive belt, so as a temporary fix I got it working with a loom band.

Now seeing as I am wanting to go live (gold) again at some point I am also not wanting to get my account banned due to the fact that it has been chipped, as I know that even though you are using original discs it still logs that you are using a chipped XBOX.

I have had a look through the internet and from what I can gather it is the DVD drive that gets flashed/modded/chipped, What I am basically wanting to do is put it back to an XBOX that wont accept copied games etc, so I did some more trawling through the web and found 2 videos on YouTube however and after watching them, to me, it seems like if I follow what they suggest it technically still leaves me with a chipped XBOX. Links below

    VIDEO 1
The part of this video that is relevant to my dvd drive is from about 26:50 and trust me to get the most awkward DVD drive lol

To me this is just basically doing the same as what I already have at the moment.

    VIDEO 2

Again, to me if I do as this guy suggests, then basically what I am still left with is technically still a chipped drive

A friend of mine said that I should just be able to change the DVD drive, however I read somewhere that each XBOX has a code from the DVD drive which is registered to it so to eliminate just a optical swap and probably try and make more money out of you, he also recommended an external HD DVD drive that plays XBOX games.

    Questions
Is it Possible to just change the optical drive?
Could I buy an external optical drive and would this work?
Is it a no hope dead end street I am trying to go down?
Would any of this even work?

Thanks in advance and sorry if I seemed like I was waffling

I see what you are saying, I did see this before I posted my thread but hopefully the moderators/admin will see is that I am not trying to modify the chip but rather revert it back so in effect although we are talking about it, its not to as if I am asking how to chip it which would be a direct violation of rules and legality issues for something illeagal

They don't ban your account, its the console itself that gets black listed. If your friend has been on live this may already be the case.

Xval will tell you the current status of the console, guide here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?annot...&feature=iv&src_vid=UVmuJw_IPNg&v=_4k3P8MgN_g

If it's banned reversing the drive flash won't do anything, the console will remain banned. However if it's not banned to reverse the flash you need the matching drive key from the original firmware or the 360's nand, if the key is correct on the flashed drive when you open jungleflasher do the phatkey command and copy the key it gives you and paste it into an original drive firmware for the liteon d2s, then flash the drive in the same manner as the guides you linked. You shouldn't need the probe etc because that is only for retrieving the key in the first instance from the stock firmware.

    edit, this may explain better:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixQUYkGF7Kg
So ignore his first step of opening the dummy file and get your drive into vendor mode and read the firmware from your drive to retrieve the key, then pick up his guide from where he loads the stock firmware and do the spoof section and so on. Where he says push the button on the probe basically he's power cycling the drive, so no need to worry about the ck3 probe, just unplug the drive power and reconnect.

Talking about console modding is allowed, talking about chipping is not. He's talking about reverting the drive to 'as new' status basically.

Bit-tech isn't full of people specialised in console modding, you could look into a different, more specialised forum.

I've repaired a number of drives buy getting the exact same drive and swapping the controller boards over.

The HD DVD drive idea is simplest option though.

Thanks everyone for the advice so far, I might sign up to a specific xbox360 forum, I just thought I would try on here as I know a lot of my fellow bit tech members are more electronically minded than I am and I thought that someone may have had some experience, any avenue I go down to get advice or help is always a good one.

I will have a look at davvy76's link when I get a chance as I have my daughter for the next few days

If I understand correctly by swapping the control boards, that's the same as the 2nd video in my original post. If I was to do that, wouldn't I just be back to where I am at the moment?

    Thanks again guys

Ah, when you said chipped I thought you meant console.

If you have the original Firmware and DVD key it's as simple as connecting to a PC and reflashing but you'll have to google instructions for your specific drive

When my 360 Elite DVD drive died, I replaced it, swapped boards on the BenQ dvd drive (old board onto "new" drive) and soldered it all back together. That being said, you can swap different boards, of the same model, with a JTAG cable to reset the board identity to the Xbox I've read. That is beyond me personally, but it is documented on the internet. It'd get you a new DVD-ROM board at least.

As far as what i can gather from what i have found on the internet, with the 360 iits the dvd drive that gets chipped, however i could be mistaken.

Unfortunatly I dont have the original firmware. for the moment, i am just trying to find out if what i am understanding is correct and if it can be reversed as it seems cheap enough to do so or would the investment of a 2nd 360 would be the best option and give this one to my daughter for some of the more childish games so she gets used to the idea of co-ordination.

I think the process is the same as the first video, but not sure about that lead with the on off switch, however davvy said that i shouldnt need the probe. think now that the daughter is in bed some more indepth research is in the night ahead of me lol

Well just looked at the Xval and according to that the "Secdata is Clean" and according to what the guy in video says and the search i did, this means the console isn't black listed - So thats a good start!
