    Welcome to Dreadnought.

    So what is Dreadnought?

Dreadnought is a computer being built to highlight the valuable work of the Royal British Legion and Every Man Remembered, a campaign to commemorate the 1.1 million commonwealth service men and women that died during the First World War.

    http://www.everymanremembered.org/

    The words of a child

When Gemma from the West Midlands visited the CWGC Tyne Cot Cemetery in Belgium with her local Explorer Scout Unit, she wrote to the Royal British Legion:

"I know that not everyone can be remembered as individuals, but I felt it was a shame for some people to have dozens of poppies and crosses while others had no one left to remember them”. Gemma, 14

Over the coming weeks I will be introducing you to over 20 fantastic companies who are supporting Dreadnought in its transformation from a CAD image into working computer, and who very much hold the sentiments expressed by Gemma.

So stay tuned in, become part of Dreadnought and show that we do care.

    DREADNOUGHT mock up case

    DREADNOUGHT EVERY MAN REMEMBERED

    mock up case

I feel like the Bit Tech community is very much part of Dreadnought as it was some of the tremendous builds on here that led to the first ideas for a scratch build computer.

So I spoke to a friend who works at WPR Media to run the idea past them, the helpful chat resulted with Dremel being one of the companies coming on board to support the project.

So after meeting up with Dave a retired engineer who runs a project called the Men's Shed We’ve taken the first steps to turn Dreadnought from a CAD design to a working computer, building the mock up case to see how the components will fit.

A big thanks to Dremel UK who shared the full mock up case build on their Facebook page.

    water cooling fittings

    DREADNOUGHT EVERY MAN REMEMBERED

    water cooling fittings

A mixture of some of the Alphacool fittings that will be used. 12mm copper pipe will fit into hard line compression fittings that connect up to the ports on the radiators, pumps and water blocks.

I was also hoping to have pics of the two D5-Vario pumps with the bronze tops to show, but Dave grabbed them and went off to the shed saying Dremel over and over again !!! :worried:

so it sounds like a polishing going on. :jawdrop:

An engineer and his tools... priceless :D

    Motherboard MSI X99 Carbon

    DREADNOUGHT EVERY MAN REMEMBERED
Two more companies you will be familiar with is MSI and Dino PC. Back in May we received this very well packaged box from Dino that had MSI’s flagship X99 carbon motherboard included, one of the very first in the UK, supplied to the Dreadnought project by MSI.

This is such a beautiful board and the quality is fantastic, so a big thank you to MSI UK, and Nic and the lads at Dino PC. :cooldude:

    DREADNOUGHT bronze water pump tops

    DREADNOUGHT EVERY MAN REMEMBERED

    Bronze water pump tops

The box we received from Aquatuning UK also included two D5 Vario Pumps with bronze tops that Dave took away to his shed to polish. I caught up with Dave polishing the tops. :dremel:

When these pump tops are produced, they are sandcast and look very industrial, which is very much what Dreadnought is about. But since they will be a feature, it was always intended to polish them.

The Dremel was very easy to use for this size application, first taking back the sandcast finish and then polishing it up to the image you see below. :thumb:

It will be given a final polish later before giving it a coating of a specialist finish by Bromoco Systems, who I’m meeting with shortly. These people coat so many things the list is unbelievable and I have included a link so you can get an idea of some of the amazing projects that their coatings protect. http://www.bromoco.co.uk/

We had to turn the lights down for the reflection. :hip:

    The Somme

    The Somme
The 1st of July 2016 sees the 100 year anniversary of the battle of the Somme, sadly claiming the lives of many on both sides.

One of the companies I'm proud to have on board the dreadnought project is Bay Plastics who will be making the one-off case for the Dreadnought build. I first came across Bay through their involvement In making one-off sets for TV studios, The Olympics also their work on the WW1 Every Man Remembered Sculpture

The Every Man Remembered statue was First unveiled in Trafalgar Square in London and promotes the Royal British Legion’s campaign which urges the public to pay personal tributes to the 1.1 million Commonwealth servicemen and women who died during the 1914 to 1918 conflict. http://www.everymanremembered.org/

Bay Plastics with the assistance of the artist Mark Humphrey designed the the 7.5 meter high obelisk, Bay also the taking on the task of transporting and assembling the obelisk many times over the next four years as it tours the country.
    http://www.bayplastics.co.uk/casestudies.html

The statue has already made appearances in Edinburgh Cardiff and London’s Trafalgar Square. It will be on display in Blackburn in front of the town hall, from June 27 to July 11, coinciding with the Somme Commemoration period.

    The Dreadnoughts

HMS Dreadnought 1906 digital art by TolyanMy

    The Dreadnoughts

HMS Dreadnought: 17,900 tons; 526 feet in length; ten 12 inch guns, eighteen 4 inch guns, five torpedo tubes; maximum belt armour 11 inches; top speed 21.6 knots.

The naval race between Germany and Great Britain between 1906 and 1914 created huge friction between both nations and it is seen as one of the causes of World War One. In 1906, Britain launched the first dreadnought – a ship that meant all others were redundant before its awesome fire power. Her name came to be associated with an entire generation of battleships, the "dreadnoughts", as well as the class of ships named after her. The generation of ships she made obsolete became known as “pre-dreadnoughts". She was the sixth ship of that name in the Royal Navy. By 1914 Britannia had 29 dreadnoughts Germany 17.

British sailors in WW1 not only fought at sea but were also sent to the trenches to fight along side infantry.

    http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/remembrance/ww1-centenary/every-man-remembered/

The water tank on Dreadnought will be perspex and copper with three ports for G14 fittings, with the words Dreadnought and its meaning.

The GPU back plate is copper with Every Man Remembered and the poppy covering the two water-cooled MSI cards. All engraving will thankfully be done by Pete J Harris, a hand engraver with over 25 years’ experience. The background shows four WW1 dreadnoughts in fleet.

Peter working on hand engraving a ships bell in his shop in Ryde Isle of wight, sadly a dying art.

Six ships and one submarine of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS Dreadnought in the expectation that they would "dread nought", i.e. "fear nothing, but God", the 7th being a British nuclear submarine would have had sailed in to port under the Jolly Roger if it had been in conflict, better known for it's reputation as a pirate flag

A century ago – and at the cutting edge of the naval technology of the day

On 5 September 1914 the German U-boat U21 sank the British cruiser HMSPathfinder. Eight days later the British submarine E9 sank the German light cruiser SMS Hela.

The Jolly Roger is not an official flag of the British Admiralty but are made by the crew of the submarine

A contemporary newspaper sketch from 1914. of E9's return, flying the Jolly Roger.
On her return to port, the boat’s crew raised the Jolly Roger – a slap in the face for the fuddy-duddies in the Admiralty who thought submariners little better than pirates.

2011 Commander Rob Dunn (centre) and senior crew under HMS Triumph's Jolly Roger, decorated with Tomahawks on her return to HM Naval Base Devonport, Plymouth.

First Dreadnought was a 40-gun built in 1553. Second Dreadnought was a 41-gun ship launched in 1573.

1st HMS Dreadnought 52-gun third-rate ship of the line launched in 1654.

2nd HMS Dreadnought 60-gun fourth-rate ship of the line launched in 1691.

3rd HMS Dreadnought 60-gun fourth rate launched in 1742.

4th HMS Dreadnought 98-gun second rate launched in 1801.

5th HMS Dreadnought battleship launched in 1875.

6th HMS Dreadnought revolutionary battleship, launched in 1906.

7th HMS Dreadnought (101) was the UK's first nuclear-powered submarine, launched in 1960.

This build is shaping up to be something very special indeed with a unique theme. I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops as brass, copper and bronze in builds is very close to my heart.

    Fitting the Monstas

    DREADNOUGHT EVERY MAN REMEMBERED

    Fitting the Monstas

The Alphacool Monsta radiators were picked for the sheer size, being 86mm deep and able to cool the most demanding of systems. Dreadnought will use three Alphacool Monstas 1 x 360mm 2 x 120mm, also 2 x Alphacool XT45, 140mm 45mm deep.

Cooling will flow from the GPU into the Monsta 360 radiator, then to the water tank going into one more Monsta 120 radiator before cooling the CPU.

From the CPU passing into another Monsta 120 radiator and out to the two D5 pumps then back into two more radiators, this time XT45 Alphacool 2 x 140mm, taking the last heat out of the CPU and pumps before returning to cool the SLI GPU configuration.
The quality of the radiator is excellent and everything fitted very nice. A big thanks to Aquatuning and Alphacool. :thumb:

We’ve started to see how the components would fit in the case, the two D5 pumps will line up with the out port on the 120 mm Monsta 86 mm thick radiator.

360mm Monsta top part of case for the GPU cooling.

    2 x 120mm Monsta mid case.

Two views of the case with top and mid cooling in place Monsta 1 x 360 plus Monsta 1 x 120 for GPU cooling, lower Monsta 120 for CPU cooling.

2 x 140mm XT 45 radiators will be in the lower plinth for CPU and pump cooling. On leaving the second XT the cooling will go direct to the water blocks on the MSI GPU. :waah:

Once the mock up work is complete what are your plans for the final case material and construction? I would imagine that there will be some serious weight to support?

    Hi Steve

The dimensions of the case and the weight of the fully built PC is something that we are looking at, as it will be shipped down to Dino PC in London after full completion. http://www.dinopc.com/

The case is designed to look solid so we will use 10mm thick industrial plastics for the main case, 5mm perspex for the front and back window covers. We have meetings planed with Bay Plastics engineering department. http://www.bayplastics.co.uk/

Also meeting with North East Custom Coatings, who will hydro dip the case with black brushed aluminium for the final finish. http://www.northeastcustomcoatings.co.uk/

    SHINY FANS

    DREADNOUGHT EVERY MAN REMEMBERED

    SHINY FANS

Two more companies I would like to introduce.
Shiny Hardware, who have been involved with Dreadnought from day one. When their box arrived I was surprised it was so large for the fans they were supplying, but upon opening it I realised Shiny had gone around their warehouse and put in everything they thought we might possibly need!

LEF Distribution, are a new company, who wanted to show support for the project and sent a box with all sorts of cables in black braiding, more than I could list, as well as every type of cable connection you could find.

A massive thanks to both Rob at Shiny Hardware and LEF Distribution for all the support. :thumb: http://lef-d.co.uk/

Dreadnought will use a total of 12 fans.
As the three Monsta radiators are 86mm deep a total of 10 x 120 mm fans in push pull mode will be used. The case back bone is 10mm thick making a fan shroud on the front of the radiators, the 2 x 140 fans on the XT45 radiators in the plinth will work in pull mode.

The fans will be controlled by a controller in the plinth that will take water temp readings at three points in the pipe work with Phobya temperature sensors, giving readings to 3 channels.

    Channels
1 Taking reading after the GPU controls 6 x 120mm fans on the 360 Monsta.
    2 Taking reading before the CPU and controls the 4 x 120mm on 2 x 120 Monstas.
    3 Taking readings before the GPU controls 2 x 140mm fans on the 2 x XT45.
4 Taking air temperature readings in the case. 5 LED control voltage. 6 Open to options of reading from other temperature sensor placement.
