Want a 6-core CPU but can’t afford the i7-980X? How about an i7-970?

PIty this is still massively expensive..Was expecting mid £400's max ..

 

I think id rather build a full system around the 930 tbh i could have a full system for about the price of this chip alone and from the charts theres not much if any improvement from having the 970 over the 930.

Intels high end chip pricing fails (again).

 

It's too expensive I can get the 980x new for £100 less.

980 is awesome. If only it were half the price!

 

Over £700 for a non extreme intel CPU?!

As Unknownsock stated mid £400's would be acceptable for this cpu. £700+ is taking the Michael.

 

This is for people who aren't extreme enough for the extreme edition chips, clearly.

 

If I read the gaming charts right, the overclocked 930 out-performs the overclocked 970 for a third of the price?

I think I might just save and get a 980. I am hoping to get into six cores soon. Anyone know if intel is gonna stick with x58 for a while longer or should I wait for a new chipset?

 

X58 is due to be replaced sometime in 2011, but a 980X isn't exactly going to age quickly and look slow anytime soon

 

Oh in that case I might just either get a second hand one then when the price drops or update to new chipset. Hopefully before march then I can et it for my bday.

£730 and it'll just manage 4GHz? My E8400 will manage that, and it was only £120 new!

True enough - but remember, the original poster was asking specifically about the i7-980X EE.

 

Jaysus, the price is a complete let down. As the article says, may as well spend not that much extra on a 980x.

 

intel has no competion and this just shows that so clearly its sad

980x ee is less on most retailers than this. Glad i got mine when i did dout ill need a new cpu for the next 3-4 years ( not that anything has ever lasted that long lol)

people are pushing the 980x ee to 5ghz on water without issues and this bearly hit 4ghz its just poor

 

God intel are so stupid and greedy, seriously what is the point in this overpriced piece of silicon.
And this is the revised, more affordable edition!

In threaded apps like Cinbench its offers around a 30% increase over a safely clocked i7 930 which you can buy right now for £210.

So you're paying OVER £500 for 30% increase in power over another CPU. It would be like buying a car for 210k, then buying the exact same model for 730k because the dealer says its got a bit more power.
520k more for the same car with a bit more power? Does anyone else see the sickening gluttony here?

I mean, its just pure greed. I already made my little stand against intel a few days ago and spent several k on AMD x6 hardware, while clock for clock its lower, it actualyl allowed me to buy more units because of the ram and mobo savings, so for the money (several thousand pounds) I have a setup which trounces Intel in terms of overall processing power.

No on is denying this is a bad chip, but how could it be? Part of the turn on of the 920 and 930 is it offers great performance at a reasonable price, this seems like a bugatti veyron, yes its fast and powerful, but then it could never fail.

had intel had an ounce of visioon and sold these for around the £400 they would have sold millions, it would have been enough to tempt people, even if they drop this CPU £200 over the next 12 months, its still going to be too expensive for most people to buy.

Intel, sort yourselves out, karma always wins in the end. NOBODY<<< is going to be tempted by this, if they were they would have gotten the i7 980 already.

 

Maybe the next revision of this will be a better clocker. Sorry but I'm a bit new to computers still but is this how it normally happens with intel releasing the top of the range one first and working the clock speed down to the budget one that's identical to the rediculous one? Or is this just a fill in until the new chipset?

 

I'm sorry Intel, but for that price I can get a i7-930+GTX480+ some nic AC setup so I can OC my 930. And if I were to need a hex-core, I'd probably wait for Sandybridge.
I'm just hoping, that they'll reduce the price to say, 699$ or smth like that ( i7-960 is @569, so they can't go lower obviously) and that new stepping will be better clockers, like with 920 C0 and D0.
