Thinking about trying Windows home server as the "storage" PC is starting to do more sharing to several devices and is currently running Win7 Wondering what server edition is best on the MS range? Thanks
WHS 2011 is perfect for home use. Obviously it's not the best edition of server they make but it also doesn't cost £5k like datacentre does.
I use WHS 2011, its good, the price has been slashed too, less than £40 at CCL (free deliver for forum member too): http://www.cclonline.com/product/58706/CCQ-00128/Operating-Systems/Microsoft-Windows-Home-Server-2011/SFT0108/
Could you not just use Unix or Linux and use a samba server save yourself the money? If its only going to be used for storage? Would map to windows for you to access?
I do use the PC to watch films on as well and as a normal PC if the main one is encoding etc so prefer to use windows. I do have another PC planning to test Linux server on sometime though but thats for another day
windows home server 2011 intergrates with win 7 libraries, can do automatic backups of all machines connected to it, and allow remote access to your content
Access to your media over the internet with live transcoding for mobile devices. Software RAID 5 for HDD's. Increased reliability. There are also a number of plugins to offer even more functionality.
Excuse the daft question but when you say "integrates with win 7 libraries" does this mean the contents of say the video folder will show up in my win 7 PC's video library folder? Of is it like a homegroup that shows up as seperate entries like the homegroup? I really need to try this out tbh.
