Hi guys, I've asked for help on this forum before and it's always proved great so here goes again. I've had two HD5850's running in crossfire for over a year now, but this morning I updated my GPU drivers, and was confused to see that the CrossfireX tab was gone from CCC. Upon checking in device manager I saw that only one card was showing up, so I ripped out the main card and just left the secondary card plugged in. With speakers on the screen was blank, and after a 'normal' amount of time, windows made the chime, but my monitor was still reporting no signal. So is my card borked? Running a single card is fine for now, but want to see if I can work out if my secondary card is damaged before I rip it apart and add it to my collection of 'ex-video-cards.' Any thoughts? Try putting the second card in the first PCI-E express slot. It could be that there is a problem with the slot itself.
Tried both cards in both slots unfortunately, "broken" card doesn't work in either slot, "working" card works in both.
OK. Have you tried every connection on the card and what about the fans on the 'suspect' card? Do they spin up?
They spin up. I've tried both DVI ports and the HDMI port, not been able to try the DisplayPort, but a port failure wouldn't explain why when I plug BOTH cards in, the 'suspect' card doesn't show up at all in the device manager.
True, I'm guessing the card is buggered then. Has the warranty run out? EDIT: I'm only asking because I don't know how long the warranty is on AMD cards.
I would assume so. I don't have any of the original packaging. This card is ~2 years old (I got it just after release). Then added the second card about 1.5 years ago.
Ah, so no chance for an RMA. Before throwing the card in the "rubbish" pile, wait a bit for someone else to answer, in case they have a solution for you. My knowledge is just limited to checking the basics (like you did) and if there is no response from the card, chucking it away.
Yeah, it'll go in the GPU graveyard I keep, got FX5200, 6600 Ultra, 8800GTS (640), and maybe soon a HD5850 in there All stripped off just boards
strip it down to just the board. heat the oven up to 250c. place on baking tray with tinfoil rolled up to stop it touching the tray make sure the gpu is face up and cook for 11mins. this will be your last resort
Had already read about that but wanted to be absolutely sure. Would this be ok in a microwave oven operating in 'convection?'
Also, sorry for double posting, but is there any chance of this going wrong and it damaging the motherboard when I try it out?

I mean I have a microwave combi oven, it's ok with metal cookware so I assume it's not ACTUALLY microwaving, just a heating element combined with the microwave bit. If that makes any sense!
Jeez microwaving.. cooking.. talk about jumping the gun.. A key point the OP said was, "I updated my GPU drivers". Well, I just did the same thing, updating from 11.8 CCC to 11.10 CCC and had the exact same problem (I have 2 x 5850’s in crossfire) I've since reverted back to 11.8 (admittedly through system restore) and all is fine again. I’m hoping you haven’t already gone down the sledge hammer route of oven frying it with a side order of chips etc.. if not then please give the above a try Ruu1989.
Well, I was assuming that the card had been done for a while, but as I've not done any intensive gaming I haven't noticed. SO! I stripped the board, set the oven to 220, timer 8 minutes, and waited. Good god it was the longest 8 mins of my life. Took it out, let it cool, re-assembled with new thermal goop, and put it in as the only card (this didn't work AT ALL previously, not even bios), and it booted without so much as a second thought.
