Hi all, I have an old dell computer lying around which I wish to repurpose as a gaming machine. It currently contains a Radeon 5770 and I wanted to upgrade this part as this seems to be the bottleneck at the moment.

Given the limitations of the PSU (around 300W if I remember correctly) I was thinking a GTX 750 would fit the bill perfectly. The question I wanted to ask is if anyone can envisage any potential compatibility problems etc. before I currently go ahead and buy? Do I need to worry about PCI speeds etc.? I'm not actually sure what the motherboard is but the chipset is an Intel H57 I think. The CPU is an old i7.

    Thanks for the help

the wattage of the psu isnt too bad but more the quality, u should get a good quality psu as if this fail's it could take the sys down, but other than that a gtx 750ti would be a good choice.
il try answer any more questions you have.

only problem you mite have is your PSU wattage.
As long you dont have loads of hard drives running you mite just get away with 300w

If the PSU can power a 5770 it shouldn't have much problem with a 750.

Personly I would upgrade the PSU it certainly would be close, you could pick one up in the MP

Does Dell use a standard size PSU though? You may want to check that first.

Thanks for all the advice. Ideally I wanted to try and not have to upgrade the PSU if possible (purely for financial reasons). I believe the wattage should be ok as a 5770 uses more than a 750 gtx.

But there should be no other issues I assume?

Dell PSU's are fairly hardy, a low wattage GPU like the 750 should be ok imo.

I would recommend a PSU upgrade.
Although it may work, as you've said, the psu is older.
    Efficiency degrades over time.
Simply not a good idea to underpower any system.

750-750Ti range card would be a good upgrade.
