Ok , for a while the old E5200 was the chip of choice for the sub £100 market.
I've finally gotten round to looking for a replacement for my E2180 and I can't find these chips in the shops!

So what is next? Is there another chip for the same sort of price (£50-80ish) that has a good overclock like the E5200 or have I missed a shop that still does them?

    Thanks
    -J

The E5200 was replaced by the E5300, which now seems to have been replaced by the E5400.

While at the higher end of your price range is the E7400.

OcUK and Tekheads both have an E5200/E5300 in stock, although if you've got a bigger budget you might want to look at something like an E7400. :)

I would look for a quad. Might as well take a huge step and save upgrading for abit longer. Only problem is would your budget stretch to it?

I've got an E5200 kicking about - rare use, but went to 3.8GHz. Can check if it's still sitting in an old mobo if you like?

After its all said and done, wolfdale will probably outsell Nehalem by at least a factor of 10 (excluding westmere).

No L3 Cache is a CPU killer.Anyway a Dual core Nehalem cpu would be quite amazing ( 4.7GHz on air would be a superPi destroyer )

    Interesting stuff.
I may have to look second hand then. I was always after a Q6600 but I figured that as they aren't being sold new, people would be holding on to them a bit longer.

What should I be looking out for behind these numbers.
    e.g L3 Cache is important?

I think I shall be having a shufty around the classifieds.

    Right so.
Now that the Christmas rush is over, I can get looking for a chip.
Anything I need to look out for?

    Got me A E6300 2.8Ghz chip now.
That has certainly bumped up the scores!
