Just wondering how actual accurate they can get from the another website can they get your address? Out of interest! Just is the technology out there?
I've heard there is stuff out there that can pin it down to you're street. But I've also had stuff come up on the PC which was 40 miles out.
Yeh cause it wouldn't be the first time a bored english guy got into the supposedly most securest network around just for shits and giggles... ....oh hang on...
I'm no expert, but isn't the "information" behind an IP all kept safely with your ISP? It would depend on what you've actually been doing in the first place. It's my understanding that you could get into legal trouble if they nab your IP, contact your ISP and demand your information, but just gleaming info from an IP by itself wouldn't yield great results. I don't think they could do an exact location either; perhaps just a general area.
Geo-location information is set on the IP address by the ISP themselves. Given most people have dynamic IP addresses, I would expect it never to be any more accurate than your City, or perhaps your borough. In the case of most ADSL ISPs it just says the POP location for the ISP itself. In the case of cable, it might show your borough or your town.
I'm shown in the right postal code area sometimes, and sometimes in completely the wrong city. I'll start getting worried when I see "Find hot girls now in Number 26, just opposite you on the other side of the street!" in the ads.
Your IP contains no information about your address. The clostest thing they can get from you is which ISP and the location of your nearest Tier 3 network (Your local ISP network that handles your IP) Your ISP will know your address when they gave you your IP but they don't hand it out. There is no way someone can know your exact location. Sometimes
Is that at the same time you look out your window and see your elderly neighbour smiling ands waves her hanky trying to get your attention saying "whooo hoooo young man, could you help me with my blocked sink?" To the OP: its a bit hit and miss most IP traces end up at the location of your ISP server etc..however for legitimate/legal reasons they can apply for the account details of the user of a particular IP for your ISP if required.
