I was thinking of changing my 780ti's for 2 980's is the power saving worth it or should I wait for Max Maxwell also planning to move to an x99 in the summer I have a budget of £4000
The launch date of any card above the 980 is still completely unknown, there are some unconfirmed rumours that it will be around 30% faster, but take that with a mountain of salt. Personally I wouldn't wait, simply put the 980 will likely hold value pretty well, so even if you dump them on ebay in less than a year it won't be much of a loss.
i would wait, the money you would lose selling the 780's would proberly be more than the savings on power
No sense in changing at all. Heir Flick nailed it - the power savings would be more than offset by the upgrade cost, and the performance difference is marginal.
I was thinking about upgrading from GTX780Ti SLI to GTX980 SLI before they were released but when they were released, I decided the performance gains were not worth it as in most cases they only seemed to be around, 5% faster but using around 50% of the power. I will be waiting for the full fat Maxwell cards to come out and when they do then I will upgrade as the 780Ti's are still holding there own, even 4K although I do drop the details down abit.
Let the X99 boards and BIOS's mature some (memory prices are still sky rocketing for X99 also), keep the Ti's for now (I'm still running a SC 780 which will crucify everything I throw at it).
Go X99, leave the GPUs as they are. Some situation here, after messing about and seeing all the benefits first hand you cant tell in any game at any res really. Benchmarks show a few extra points and the electricity bill for using the PC in a gaming environment for 3 hours a day is only £3.40 a month extra from what I can see. Thanks
Saving power isn't just about the electricity bill, but also needing less space for coolers and less fan noise. Also Titan 2 (or whatever they'll call full maxwell) will probably end up expensive as hell, so the GTX980 will easily fetch £300+ used next year.
Well the 4k budget is for a whole new system I am thinking of buying one of the Red Harbinger Cross Desk Ultimate for me to put one low powered pc in and a full fledge X99 pc on the other
The thing to do is upgrade your system but stick with the GPU(s), the change from 780ti to 980 is no way worth it. Just clicked order on this lot here five minutes ago.. Im looking forward to seeing the 900d, that's always been my super dream case. Going X99 can mean less than a grand, or over 2.. personally I see no point going beyond the 5930k - and the only reason to get that is the 40 lanes of PCIE if you are running a super high resolution panel/s. Diminishing returns is the name of the game beyond mid range. Having 2 x 780ti already I would spend the extra cash on peripherals. @OP what monitor do you have?
Wait for the 1080ti. I love my PC, but £4000? Damn... I'd put 1k on the computer and stare at the other 3k on my coffee table for a year. Me: "look what I got for 3 grand." Them: "Lawrence, that's just, 3 grand, laid out on the table." Me: "Exactly. Sugar?"
