The card in my sig blew.
So i need a new one, and it should fit to the rest of the system.
A lot of the newer powerless card should fullfill this, but as the x1800xt powerlevel has fallen of the charts, and as i've not been reading up lately, i need advice.
What card would be about as powerfull (or a bit more, just a tad) and be as cool
and cheap as possible. Maybe passively cooled?
No preference fot nvidia or ati.

    Hope for a good advice,

    Xir

    Hello there,

I'm sorry to be the one to bring the news to you but ATI does not exist anymore XD It's part of AMD now. You could aim for a Radeon 5770 passive cooled (Damn, it's been a while since I didnt said Radeon lewlz)

    Hi,

yeah I know that ATI is AMD now, just a habit calling them ATI I suppose.
The problem is I'm looking for a card that doesn't get tested here ;)

    Would a 210 series geforce do? or a 220? or a 610? or a 520, or a 620?
    AMD-sided, would a 3450 or 5450 or 6450 do?

Appearently, the 3450 is more powerfull than the 5450 and 6450.
The same goes for the 220 over the 520 and 620.

Cards in this region have never been on my radar, nor did I find comparison charts. :D

About the 9800 comment, I should have cleared that I'm looking for a current card.
(as the 9800 is a former racehorse that someone slapped a giant passive heatsink on so it won't go into the shuttle)
    Thank you anyway. :thumb:

If you still favour ATi I'd probably look at a HD 7750 or 7770. Cheap, but should still be (much) more powerful than that X1800XT. At least according to PassMark where an X1800XL (should be close enough) scores a rating of 700, while an HD 7750 or an HD 7770 score 1817 and 2156, respectively.

I'd definitely go for an actively cooled card, though. There's not much space inside a Shuttle and things can get hot very quickly.

I have no preference for AMD or Nvidia.

Hmmm, they're probably overkill compared to the rest of the system, and besides, around 100€.
I was hoping to get something for half as much maximum. (and half as powerful wich should suffice)

Thx for the quick reply though

I believe you'll have a hard time finding a current gen card much cheaper than 100 EUR. Maybe the HD 6670? Not sure if nVidia has anything similar on offer.

well a GeForce 220 or Radeon 3450 would be very cheap, I just can't find out how weak they really are. :D

I've got a HD 3470 (passively cooled) in my current work PC. Trust me, it's weak! I'd almost claim the integrated P3000 graphics in the E3-1245 in my (new) work PC* is faster, but I've not made direct comparisons.

Do yourself a favour and aim a bit higher. :)

*Not to be confused with my new home PC using an E3-1245v2.

    Hmmm, at the moment,
    KOTOR, C&C4, HL2, lego Batman. :D
The entire system is too old for newish games, at native resolution anyway.

It's going to be replaced entirely in the next few monts (well, after Christmas), and then the box is going to be doing light surfing and DVD-playback at most, so I don't want to shell out on a graphicscard that's mostly going to collect dust.

Then get a 2nd hand card. That's what I would do.

I'd at least look at a HD6570. No, scratch that. I suggest *you* should at (the very) least look at a HD6570. Or get one second hand. From what I can see cheaper options, whether from ATi/AMD or nVidia, are absolutely not worth the money. Even the HD6570 is a stretch.

Alternate.de has one from XFX, which is passive, for just shy of 50 EUR, but apparently there're issues with it. Probably because of the passive cooling.

I still think you should have gone for something like a HD7750, but of course that'd set you back at least 85 EUR.

Hmmm, i still think that would be severely limited by the rest of the system, and therefore not worth the investment.
It's only going to run for a few months.
