Was wondering if any has/had modded their rigs to have a vertical mounted CDR/DVD player on them?? Currently Newegg has some new arrivals that have the drives mounted vertical. On one rig, the drive opens upward, on another it opens downward. Just a thought, thinking it could be possible given some cases that have a meshed front to them?
My project in planning relies on two slim slot drives mounted vertically. I have tested them for a number of hours working like that and it seems fine! Imagine a laptop, you can use the dvd drive at any angle. All you need to do is work out how to mount them vertically.
I saw the white one of those in pissy world for some inordinate price - seemed very badly made. I wouldn't trust it not to eat my discs! CC
Yah supertoad, those were the ones I was talking about... That company even has some that load from the bottom....very odd how the cd just doesn't fall out...? And the drives are full size drives not slim ones? There are reviews out there about them, here's the links: Review: http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/reviews/cases/gmc-r3-corona/ CD Drive Mounted: http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/reviews/cases/gmc-r3-corona/5
Test Drive The drive I am going to use as my test subject is an ASUS DVD Burner with lightscribe technology and the ability to burn multilayer disc. Faceplate: Bottom of drive, mounting holes for vertical position: DVD Tray, Tabs keep CD/DVD from falling out in a vertical position: As seen in this google sketchup model. The drive will be mounted covering 4 5.25 drive bays, leaving 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom for air flow into the case. Moddler's Mesh will be used to cover the drive and top two drive bays. The mesh at the bottom be flush with the sides of the case to allow the tray to open. As soon as the test case comes in, I will post up some more pics.
Yeah, I remember seeing it when I worked there. Very much overpriced and looked tacky. At least the same couldn't be said for my Jeantech Aqua case. Will be interesting to see, I'd like to see you pull this off.
Why not try using a laptop drive? Probably wouldn't take up as much space, and a bit easier to fit it into the front without looking too out of place. Though perhaps having to click-in the disc every time might be annoying for some. Also you'd have to probably have the drive door coming down, since the doors don't pop open all the way, and having it coming down might entice it to.
That might work, yes. I am looking for (at the moment) a drive with zero force insert ability. Having to push and pull the CD/DVD off the tray might cause it damage over time. If this works with the test drive, I will move up to other drives.
In concept, a drive sits about 1" from the base of the case, the bezel hides that, making the drive seem flush with the bezel. Looking at the test drive, only 1/2" will be raised past the bezel so it shouldn't stand out that much. Be back soon with results.

that case Here is some pictures of that case. The case, window not standard. From the front (notice eject button). Top with normal front ports Rear, space for fans etc. Inside with a vertical drive cage. Front off showing void where cd rom drive should go. Showing cd drive mount points. Overall its OK. I had my drive in there to start with to see if it was OK, it worked untill I lost a mini-dvd in there Then it came out. The good thing about this case is that its nice and small (for a full ATX anyway). Hope this helps.
