    Hey guys.

I'm upgrading my main system hard drive this month. A couple of months ago PC Pro declared the 750gb model the king of the F1s so I'm looking at getting one. Did they get this right do you reckon?

The 750GB model is technically the same as the 1TB model, with some of its space artificially disabled.

Good knowledge, but does that mean it's quicker/slower/the same?

If you can stretch out for it I would go for the Samsung F1 HD103UJ HDD, I've had it for just under a month and it's been good so far... I've partitioned the drive into 2 and use the first partition for Windows XP and storing all my Anime on the second partition, and so far the drive hasn't done anything wierd...

Here's a linky on ebay which is going for a good price! BUT, hurry there's not many left! ^_^

It's the same; has the same areal density, spin speed and cache, just only uses 250GB of each of it's 333GB platters.

I'd go for the 1TB anyway, especially as it's going pretty cheap at Scan at the mo. No complaints with mine :D

Edit: so cheap in fact that I've just bought another for some RAID1 redundancy.

    yet another 103 user here...

I pile my Installs and Media on mine... but it's still quick enough to boot from (For most people) if you want to.

It's scary how quick you can fill it up though (Linux Distro's stack up worringly quickly!)

grab the 1TB, it's silly-cheap for what you get...

Go for the 1TB. I have it in my HTPC and it's very quiet as well as quick.

My F1 750gb goes like a rocket, just got a 1tb for storage so not sure if any difference in speed. Im guessing they're the same

Scan has the 750 at £63 and the 1tb at £66, an extra 250gb for 3 quid?? cant complain at that!

The TB is faster, substantially. The way they cut it they reduce the platter density to 250Gb per platter. The 750Gb and 1Tb have 3 platters and the Tb is 334Gb/Platter
    The fast drives.

    Faster Drives ~115Mb/s MAX Read
    320GB ¦ 1 Platter ¦ 320Gb ¦ 16Mb Cache
    640GB ¦ 2 Platter ¦ 320Gb ¦ 16Mb Cache
    1000GB ¦ 3 Platter ¦ 334Gb ¦ 32Mb Cache

    Slower Drives ~90Mb/s MAX Read
    250GB ¦ 1 Platter ¦ 250Gb ¦ 16Mb Cache
    500GB ¦ 2 Platter ¦ 250Gb ¦ 16Mb Cache
    750GB ¦ 3 Platter ¦ 250Gb ¦ 32Mb Cache

    Where are those figures from?
In the PC Pro hard drive lab last month the F1 750 GB was faster than the F1 1 TB.
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/252123/samsung-spinpoint-f1-1tb.html
Maybe the 750 GB model has the inner part of the platter disabled, IIRC the outer part of the platter is faster?

Sorry those figures are Max readings. I have compiled those results myself by running HD tune on the drives after a fresh windows install from machines at work. The 750GB I tested maxed out at 90Mb/s and averaged about 70Mb/s its possible that variance in motherboards has effected that there but as far as I am aware they cut off the inner area of the disk (which is the fastest part.) And TBH I wouldn't trust PCPro as far as I can throw them. I'd Much rather rely on the data that I personally have collected.

    Just Re-Ran My F1 1TB and got 116.8MB/s Max and 90.6MB/s average

I always though that the outer edge of the platter was the fastest, due to its greater circumference, can anybody give a definitive answer?
