Sharing a broadband internet connection

Hi guys. I run 2 PCs, 1 wired and 1 wireless.

My old router just died and I got a new one, but I can't access the internet wirelessly any more. When I set up the old one, it shared the internet connection automatically with the 2nd PC and my old laptop, but the new one doesn't.

I've installed all the hardware (Linksys modem/router & USB receiver) and the 2nd PC is connected to the router wirelessly, but won't go online. This isn't something I really know anything about, so be gentle! Thanks in advance.

You can access the router setup page OK via http? e.g. by typing 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of any browser?

you may have to remove the wireless network from the PC and re-enter the security details.

Thanks, guys. When I set up the last router, I didn't need to create anything like a network. I simply set up the router on the main PC and created an SSID etc.

I then put a wireless card in the 2nd machine and searched for networks, connected to the router and went straight online. This time, I can connect to the router with the new hardware (USB receiver) and the signal's great, just no internet.

Do I need to get to the router settings from the 2nd machine? Sorry to sound thick, but it's something I've never needed to do before.

dark_aveneger......thanks for the response mate, but I don't think I ever created one in the first place!

Thanks again.

It sounds like the new router has a password automatically set for the wireless, you will need to input this onto the wireless pc to get a connection.

You should really have done this with the old router as well, no telling who has been using your network and for what purposes.

Also you could check and see if the wireless PC is getting a sensible IP, i.e. 192.168.x.x rather than 258.x.x.x or something else odd.

I agree with Dark Avenger, You also need to see if your actually connected to the Router. You need to go do (RUN type in CMD then ipconfig /all) this will give you your internal IP address.

If you get a 169.000.000.000 or anything (anything 169. anything else is a self assigned IP)of the sort the computer is not connected to the router it has an internal address. HERE is how to trouble shoot your IP address with XP (but should apply to vista and W7 also).

It would also help to know the OS you have and the router type and brand/model number and revision. This will make it easier to give you advise.

Hi guys...thanks for all the advice and sorry for not putting all the info in the original post.

Both the main PC and the 2nd wireless one are running XP SP3. The modem router is a Linksys WAG160N (802.11n draft & all backwards compatible) and the wireless adapter is the USB one that came bundled with the modem.

I first tried using the bundled software, but then switched back to Windows. The wireless PC connects fine to the router (300MBPS & Very good to Excellent reception). When I try to do anything online (updates, surfing etc.) I get no response.

I've tried pinging my ISP's IP address and it's URL and I usually get 3 out of 4 fails. I've taken all anti-virus off the wireless PC to avoid any conflicts and have just enabled XP's firewall for the time being. Once it's set up, I'll put Kapersky back. I'll try to find the IP of the wireless machine, as you guys suggest and post back.

Thanks again, and in advance, for all the help.

PS. Relax, Bagpuss...WPA2 enabled and passwords are set. I entered those details into my kids PS3 and all was fine. Same with the Wii, it's just this damn desktop that's giving me a headache.

WPA and WPA2 are pretty much the same - the difference is immaterial in a normal home-use environment tbh.

Right...I've dragged the 2nd PC downstairs and plugged it into the router via the ethernet port. No problems, so it's definitely a wireless problem.

I'm just catching up with all the Windows updats since it was last online and then I can have a look at the protocols.

One thing I'm not sure of though...does the 2nd machine still use the same IP address & TCP/IP protocols when connected with wire as when wireless?

The other thing I've just found out is that, as this is my old machine, it's got the same name as the new one. How do I go about changing the computer's name as I guess this might be causing a conflict?

Thanks again.

Problem solved! Thanks for all the help, guys.

In the end, I had to go through the router set up and mess around with the wireless channel and fragmentation? Anyway, it seemes to work.

Cheers. Dave.
