    Hi guys,

Any reason why I can't just go to the nearest fabric shop and buy big rolls of fabric as a cheap backdrop?

nope, though you will find fabric comes on rolls about 1.4 meters wide, which may be too narrow depending on what you are shooting and how far it sits infront.

Creases and folds look like hell. Good luck in getting your fabric to be free of folds and creases.

use fleece, its really hard to get creases in it without ironing them in and its still cheap. if you do get creases in it you can also stretch it tight and the folds will vanish.
