Hey guys I would like to move my movies collection onto my PC. What is the best DVD ripping software for the task? I have PLENTY of space, I want to be able to rip all of my DVD's and not lose any video or audio quality, totally uncompressed. Also, what is the best player with which to watch my videos with? Will the player be able to broadcast my audio in 5.1 for my 5.1 setup? If the software is free all the better, but I'm not saying I am unwilling to pay a small price for the convenience.
I used badaboom and dvd43 and got some good results. edit: It looks like the new fermi cards aren't supported by badaboom.
hehe yeah there's a lot of ways to do it.. I wasn't going to post but since bindi helped- might as well.. before nexxo bans my ass I use nero 10 (nero recode) + anydvd.. rips a whole dvd in like 20 minutes full quality with all the audio streams (like let's say they stick in a spanish track or directors cut) + subtitles and works well with win 7 it's so easy it's almost criminal.. anydvd runs in the taskbar and does it's thing- console gamer/emachine friendly
+1 DVD Shrink... but you have them in ISO.. so you need a Virtual drive (example: Daemon tools) to load them. I set so that when a DVD is inserted it plays automatically in Windows Media Player 12 64-bit. Now as soon as double click on a ISO, Daemon Tool loads it, and the auto-run kicks-in. If you want Windows Media Center to play it, then you'll need to have them in video format instead of ISO.. but that means reduce quality and lose the menu feature.
DVDfab to copy films, DVDs, blu rays then use xbmc to watch them. I use the aeon interface which looks absolutely stunning. DVDfab isn't free but works amazingly well. Xbmc is free and is pretty easy to set up if you read a few tutorials. Also it is able to play 5.1 ss.
VLC can rip a DVD in a few minutes. The file sizes are huge (about 1GB per half hour) but they are files, rather than .iso images. This means you can play them with pretty much anything, i.e. stream them over a home network.
Dvd's don't look very good on my monitor never have, ripped some blu rays on the other hand and they look great. Even a blu ray compressed to 2gb looks ok, but for the quality 10gb is about right. Storage is getting so cheap, I paid £49 for a 500gb external drive last year and thought that was cheap now for the same price you can get a 1 terabyte.
Likely you'll all cringe at this, however the system I use has a very high (non-tech savy) WAF. Windows 7 (audio by-pass card) + Windows Media Center + MyMovies (full activation) + AnyDVD HD + Clone DVD. I have it setup so that when the HTPC boots, all that comes up is the media center browser, only music and MyMovies is selectable. When you insert a blu-ray / dvd it downloads all the data (after asking you if it selected the correct DVD), then grabs the main title and saves it uncompressed as an ISO. The MyMovies plugin browser is rather slick... and playback is automated!
BTW.... it stores the ISO and movie data temporarily to an internal storage drive. My actual libraries are on a large ReadyNas in another room. In addition, while my movie (or cd) is being backed up, other music/movies may be played.
I tried a good few but DVDcloner7 is by far the most succesfull. It will rip everything and updates itself continuously to insure you can rip even the most up to date titles in your collection.
Using the mediabrowser plugin you can playback .iso files in media center, aslong as you have daemon tools installed. Thats how my htpc was setup and ran without any problems
