So, I've had really long boot times for as long as I can remember now. I'm sure it wasn't this bad when I first installed my OS, but I've just lived with it and tried to reboot as little as possible I've tried the usual stuff: -Defrag -CCleaner -Virus scan -Remove unnecessary start up apps / services -sfc /scannow -memtest -chkdsk ...but the problem seems to be windows itself: With windows booting + additional stuff, my boots times are bordering on 10 minutes until it is responsive Any ideas? Cheers
You could try enabling verbose boot messages, that should enable you to see what's causing the delay.
Boot logging showed some drivers did not load: Did not load driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS Did not load driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\MpFilter.sys Did not load driver \??\C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Fuel\amd64\AODDriver2.sys Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\srv.sys Would these cause a slowdown before or after the login screen? (Logging in is the part that is painfully slow - even on a fresh account) Anyway, how do I go about fixing them? Only USB device I have plugged in is my mouse.
Tried booting in safe mode - significantly faster, though not exactly fast. Still takes a while to become responsive after the desktop shows. Same as above for Diagnostic startup (load basic devices and services only). Selective startup (disabling all startup items and all non-microsoft services) was noticeably slower than safe mode / diagnostic startup.
From what you describe it seem to be both slow to boot and once it has booted it's also slow to logon, show the desktop and finish loading. I can't really think where to start, i guess it's fine once its all done with the booting/loading ? If so you could try using the XPERF and XBOOTMGR tools from Microsoft to diagnose what is the cause.
10 minutes, that's it? For me its 30min minimum on a good day (time from power on to last autostartup program finished loading), if its after crash and RAID arrays starts verifying - triple it.
