One thing i wish Steam would do is release a Steam lite client, its got awfully bloated with all the added features, features that I and probably many people never use, things like Steam controller, Big picture, VR, Family sharing, Streaming, and Broadcasting, the Steam client now stands at around 500MB. :(

Tell me about it. I just want to see my games, launch them and browse the store.

About time. You know steam is a bit behind the curve when users start to prefer the look and performance of Origin..

My store page has become polluted with trash Japanese culture games for children and enough of the junky end of early access to fill a google server farm.

I especially look forward to being able to remove VR only titles from the view.

I agree (though, VR is an independent package that you have to download separately) but I think all these features are included for the same reason MS crams all their crap into Windows - they want you to use these features, and the only way for you to know about them is if it's forced to be in front of you. But much like most MS products, the only one of those features Valve profits from is the controller.

Anyway, there is a Steam CLI client. I don't know everything that it can do, but if you want to go REALLY minimal, there's that.

HiDPI support for the Steam client would be good too, for those of us using high resolution monitors.

(Also thanks to the article for reminding me to check GOG Connect again - had a nice surprise when I found Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition could be added to my account).

They need to sort out their Linux client. Took me hours of Googling to get it working properly on Ubuntu 16.04

it's not too hard, you're just better off installing all the 32 bit versions of the libraries, which they're kind of vague about.

I was surprised, having had no problems getting Steam working on a 64-bit Ubuntu install - then I remembered that I had a bunch of 32-bit libraries installed already, for my Dell printer. That'd do it!

I knew I put that computer somewhere around here....

How hard is it to add the necessary dependencies when they package the client? I was a bit annoyed that it wouldn't just install when I added Steam. Well it did, but it was giving me an error every time I started it. I mean this is Valve, its not like they couldn't afford to put someone on making the install work out of the box. Maybe they are having trouble finding their development machines under their piles of money.

I agree, though what I don't get is they do supply *some* of their own dependencies, but not all the necessary ones. To make matters more confusing, games seem to pick and choose which libraries they want to use (all sorts of issues with libstdc++6.so) which causes games to not launch properly.

Overall it isn't really that bad once you get it going. I personally use Arch, which (surprisingly) is actually a bit harder to get going than Ubuntu.
