Hello All I am about to build a new PC and i could really do with some advice from people that know what there talking about. the PC i am building is 90% for online gaming parts i know i want are AMD Phenom 2 965 quad care Black Ed 3.4ghz 8mb AM3 and 2 X (AMD ATI Radeon HD 5970) but what i dont know is what motherbourd and RAM,i was looking at getting 8g of RAM i know it must be DDR 3 and the motherboard SKT AM3 but what is the best motherboard RAM combination out there for gaming and overclocking and if possible upgrading latter on Thanks for reading and any help Kitkat
First of all, what games will you be playing online? Right now, 2 5970's are totally 100% positively overkill for any game out there. I also don't think you will be playing on full 2650 x 1600 so it's really pointless, + they will eat up more Watts than any other GFX cards and I believe that it's out of ATX specifications to run more than 1 of these. 1 will be more than enough, trust me. The core is fine, for the RAM: 8gig are great for gaming, though 4 should also be ok, but whatever you choose, keep in mind that for more than 3gig you will need a 64 bit OS. Any RAM from well known brands such as Corsair, G.Skill, OCZ or AData should be great. Personally, I simply love the G.Skill Ripjaws, and I own them, they are awesome. I can't really suggest you any good mainboard for the AMD core, as I'm not to good with AMD at all and rather an Intel fanboy.
Any real reason you want to spend £1000+ on graphics cards? I suggest going and doing some research of your own, then maybe come back with a proper list for people to check.
While AMD offer some pretty good price-performance options, Intel is still currently the place to be if you have the money. How much do you have to spend? I agree with Nova, two 5970's is overkill, one will probably do fine. Spend the money you save on an SSD for the OS and programs, and a Samsung F3 for storage :-D
thanks for the reply's i play FPS as in Counter strike source , HL2 , Cod 4 , and all the rest. yea i no that 2 5970 is pushing it but i dont what to have to do to much to it after i get it, at the moment money is no problem and i do really want the best i am going to stay with AMD atm as i have a dislike to Intel and im not getting an NVIDIA GPU ever so ati it must be but thanks again for the fast reply's
i was going to get 2 GPU'S just because i can. i dont what you to think im some little rich kid cos im not i have been working very hard to save as much money as i can for the past 3 years i dont drink i dont smoke my car is an old ford escort. so this is my treat to me and i want it to be right i dont what to get something that im not happy with
That's alright we don't think anything about you. But buying two 5970s would really be wasted money. NO game benefits from that AT ALL. Be aware of that.
You say that you want the best yet you opt for AMD. Currently AMD is not the fastest, no matter how much money you have or how much you dislike intel, its not goint to speed up AMD is it? Remember as a buyer, there is no such thing as loyalty, you want the best for your hard earned cash, and that's that. Since you have that much cash I would be gunning straight for i7. All my 2p worth of course. EDIT: Here is everything in black and white for you. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html
I agree sticking with one company through thick and thin makes them a lot of money, and robs you of performance. Nova's right, it's not that the performance increase is small, or not worth it, it's non-existent btw is your budget including a screen? Screen-size will affect what you should buy - for your money you can get a tasty screen as well. Finally, there are lots of nice components that will be good investments, and which mere mortals such as I can only dream of, such as the Silverstone Temjin cases, full watercooling, SSD raid0 for the OS, etc. Maybe look at these instead of crossfire . . .
thanks for the advice sazbard i have been working with pc for a long long time well i took my first apart when i was 7 to my dads horror, and have always been let down by Intel i have had chips fail slow slugish performance or have it work like a pro then after a year crap out. my last cpu was an amd athlon 64 it was a gr8 little chip was ment to change the would with windows 64 thats but once again Microsoft craped out a cheap OS, windows 64 that no one could get any drivers for so for the last 4 years my little 64 bit chip has been running xp 32 and it has been running like a dream back to the point if i get 8 g of ram i will need to be running vista 64 ?? or win 7 64 ??
yea i can get a new screen or more that one as 5970 can have more what would u recommend for best fps in games ? i am looking at a ssd from ocz or 2 raided but i don't no if that would make much difference with a ssd water cooling is a must or vapochill is even better as the AMD chip shows no cold bug unlike the Intel chip but again i am out of data with who is still making vapochill anymore
And if you do have that much money, it seems pointless to rule out half the market based on fanboy-ism. Especially when it comes to something like spending £1200 on graphics cards. For the money you'd allocated for GPUs alone, I could travel to your house, order a ton of kit that would satisfy a good 95+% of people, put it together, and still have money left for takeaway. If you really want the best, it's Intel's LGA1366 i7s. If not, and you're insistent on the AMD, then the board you'll be after is probably something along the lines of the MSI 790-FX GD70, or if you're veering more towards extreme overclocking, the Asus Maximus III Formula. If you're packing twin GPUs, I'd grab the MSI, as it's got masses of space for them to get the airflow you need. I'd also wait for nVidia to bring out their 300-series graphics cards, because, again, if you're spending £1200 on GPUs, you'll at least want the best, right? Intel, AMD, nVidia, and ATi have ALL had horrible products and moments where people would swear off them - Netburst, Phenom, the 5800 series, and the 2900XT respectively. That doesn't mean their products aren't good now! In fact, I'd say right now is the best time to drop all the fanboyism, because both processor and graphics markets are so competititve, and packed with goodies, all backed up by strong motherboards and a universal standard for memory. If you do a little research, you can't lose!
yep that's why i am on hear asking for help rather than running off to DELL or PC WORLD.... and the phrase that comes to mind is jealous
See, we were all being more subtle than that, until... Dell and PC World don't do full-on water-cooled Quadfire machines right, or much in the way of gaming, but Dell's office machines and tech support for businesses (a cause far more worthy than your need for an overcompensating e-peen) are first-class. Without people like Dell, the companies who make, package, and deliver this stuff, may not be able to. I think that's always worth remembering. EDIT: Removed - I'm self-editing, y'see. I think Ph4zed did have a somewhat valid point, though. To drive Quadfire, you'd need a 30 inch screen (another grand), and potentially an overclocked i7-950 with water-cooling on both processor and chipset (another grand), along with compatible case and memory that could withstand the overclock (£500ish). It's amazing how picking GPUs can influence a build...
thanks for the help MaverickWill the msi 90-fx looks like the one for me and i am going to stick to 1 GPU for the time being anyway
yea don't get me wrong dell give me lots of hours of fun when there pc go tits up and are out of warranty its people like me that have to fix them
Quad GPU's have awful scaling across the board, with 50% of the time being slower than a single HD5970. I would heavily suggest getting 3 HD5870's over those dual gpu behemoths. With cards like that unless you want bottlenecking all the time until you hit a giant resolution, you'll NEED a core i7 at 4GHz with the best cooler and its triple channel goodness. At some point down the road you will realise just what your missing out on, and its going to tick you off for a long time! Why wait for that to happen when you can adopt i7 now and not have to suddenly regret your purchase later?
