I don't like this one bit. If you get into a dispute with the revenue they can just take whatever tax they think is due without any court order and they you have to fight to get it back (if you have any money left to pay for a lawyer).

This won't affect the big fish with accountants and lawyers to move money out of reach, but will make it even harder for the ordinary individual or small busiess to argue their case against the revenue.

I don't like the direction this is going in one bit.

Here in the US we have certain financial punishments for very specific cases. For example, you can be taken to court over delinquent child support payments, and one possible result is that the court garnishes a portion of your wages so that child support payments are made before you get your paycheck. Similar punishments can be levied against people who owe back taxes or who have a history of bouncing checks and/or missed payments on other debts owed.

I'm more interested in how Wonga do it - is it via a Direct Debit?

I suppose you have to sign a direct debit mandate to get the loan.

This is going to as easy as click of a button for them now.

I would like the gov to close the tax loopholes first... None of the big corporation pay tax... effectively they pay a much smaller percentage of their profits then an ordinary person. This is builions in tax.

I think it will be easier for the gov to introduce a central database where they can have all the personal information regarding everyone in the country. This could be extended to where they work and if taxes paid etc...

    And STOP wasting tax money

Simplify the tax system and it reduces the scope for avoidance. Add new rules and schemes and it is good for tax accountants.

Any sensible tax reform should result in redundancies at HMRC. If you've ever doen a payroll you will realised how ridiculous NI is and that there is no earthly reason to separate it from Income tax unless you want to obscure how much really goes to the governement.

I would love for them to go after the big corporation but the problem with that is they have the money, lawyers and accountants to defend them selves. It's a lot easier to go after the people who don't have the ways and means to defend them selves.
Could not agree more if i tried :) IDS seems to love the idea of a universal benefit system (single payment) if only we had a similar TAX system.

    Fixed that for you.

I lot of people here seem to still be confused, who do you think the government works for?

I work for the person who pays me. And so do they. When most politians leave government where do they go? Oh yeah, big business/regulators/lobby groups, who pay a damn sight more than being in government. You want in on this gravy train then don't rock the boat.

We all know how the system should work and let this cloud our judgement when we try to actually see how it is working.

    Could not agree more.

Exactly. So what is the point to democratic system where things are dictated by the very few?

Because democracies give us the illusion that we have some form of say in things, that way we are less likely to blame the select few and send them to the guillotine. :D

Given how amazingly incompetent HMRC are as an organisation, this is a scary prospect.
