This is an extract from a recent letter printed in Micro Mart magazine about the information an LG smart TV may be gathering and what happens to the info.
The user says these settings are buried deep in the menu settings under T&C's and are often in off screen areas that don't appear unless you do a lot of scrolling around to find them, there are tick boxes for agreeing to terms of use and privacy settings but it's unclear if these actually do anything and most people would never find them, it's like installing a program, do we always read all the TOA?

Quote from the LG privacy policy.

Information we may receive, device information, your set top box, remote control,DVD or blueray player, the postcode where your LG smart TV is being set up, your IP address, MAC address, set top box manufacturer.

Viewing information, live TV content, movies and video on demand, may include the name of the channel or program watched, requests to view content, terms you use to search for content, actions taken while viewing (e.g. play, stop, pause, etc) duration that content was watched, the input method, (RF component, HDMI) and search queries.

Device information, viewing information, basic usage information and voice information are handled by LGE in such a way that members of your household are not 'generally' identified or indentifiable from that information.

The final document 'Viewing information' gives you the option to opt out of most of this but you have to find these settings first and they are on by default.

The document finishes with, I further understand and agree that LGE may share viewing information with third parties and that those third parties may share viewing information with others.
I understand and agree that viewing information may be transferred and used in various countries around the world (including Korea) some of which may not offer the same level of data protection.

So what does it all mean, well if you start getting even more spam but it's specifically aimed at the TV programs, films you've been watching and your viewing habits, now you know why and as smart TV's become more like computers I'll bet they will be another device that the likes of GCHQ will be monitoring.

Agree with this. Plus these TVs also have cameras built into them. There could be possiblity that it can be activated remotely and have live feed.... :worried:

No problem. You just make sure that you are not in visual range of the camera:

Hi, What coffee are you drinking, do you prefer black or white, sugar or no sugar, there are many different coffees, which coffee is your favourite, do you like other coffees, would you like to try some other coffees, how many cups of coffee do you drink each day, what price do you consider good value for a cup of coffee, would you like to watch some videos about coffee, do you own any coffee making products, do you own any coffee machines, we can supply many brands and types of coffee, coffee machines, coffee cups and coffee mugs.

Do you think coffee helps cure a hangover, which coffee is best for hangovers, what were you drinking that gave you a hangover, is it your favourite drink, how often do you drink it, etc, etc, etc...we also sell Viagra at very competitive prices and it goes well with all types of coffee and many alcoholic drinks...

No consumer is boring to the right people ;)

More than a week, and nobody got the Nineteen Eighty-Four reference.

    I despair for geekdom.

I burnt my copy, there were microdots on some pages and on the spine, not ordinary microdots (not the acid) cyber microdots, nano-charge-coupled devices (n-CCD) incorporating nano wi-fi, I discovered something was accessing my router via wi-fi but I wasn't using anything wi-fi

Searching online I found a lot of references to books being used for spying, books can sit on a shelf for years and monitor that room, books like 1984 are an obvious choice to use for spying as the people who read such 'literature' are often anti-establishment, anarchist types who are inclined to think for themselves and ignore the party line.

Strangely, the unknown wi-fi access has started again but the only literature I've bought recently is a mint copy of an OZ magazine from the 70's and a copy of 'How to get rich' by Felix Dennis :eyebrow:

If you think all that sounds a bit tin hat, then check this!

London's Dustbins 'Mine' Passing Smartphones for User Lifestyle Data.

I'm going to burn my dustbin, but my neighbour has just bought a big new bin and leaves it right next to my back gate, I can see it from my window and now there are two unidentified sources accessing my wi-fi...

Just to add fuel to the fire, and to pander to the conspiracy theorists.

Amazon's Fire TV could be the CIA's perfect home spying device

That site is run by GCHQ, NSA, etc, and used to put out disinformation and help build false conspiracy theories by reinforcing urban myths and legends as they have done with alien conspiracies, they focus peoples attention on false conspiracies which helps to detract attention away from real issues, they have done this for decades. 'WOW, did you see all those UFO's?' 'Stealth project'...never heard of it.

People like Erich von Däniken are allowed to keep broadcasting their theories because the security services know that many people believe that Erich von Däniken and his kind are just conspiracy theorists and are not taken seriously.

Years ago security services used operations like 'Project MKUltra' sometimes referred to as the CIA's mind control program, The scope of Project MKUltra was broad, with research undertaken at 80 institutions, including 44 colleges and universities, as well as hospitals, prisons and pharmaceutical companies.[10] The CIA operated through these institutions using front organizations, although sometimes top officials at these institutions were aware of the CIA's involvement.

Today, with the technology available to the security services they have all the connected and networked population to experiment on.
