Interesting problem I've never encountered before... Windows popped up and said my 2TB F3 was about to fail, so I must back everything up! So I ran the usually disk checks in windows, no problems found... very odd. I haven't had any problems before so I felt this was very strange and just went about my business. Windows then proceeded to tell me every 20 mins or so that the disk was failing (despite me watching CSI stored on the disk) so I downloaded SeaTools. SeaTools is telling me that the SMART test and Short Drive Self Test failed, but the generic tests passed. It is still under warranty so should I send it back? Are there any other tests and checks I can do on it either?
Yes. In a moment the tool from your hard drive manufacturer says there is a problem, you should RMA it. Hell, it's even on the Seagate webpage : http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=0df7edc52f0fc010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD
Oh sorry, got confused by your usage of SeaTools. For Samsung, you have to use HUTIL : http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber...!-1!40774747!1761676348!7501!-1!1235414707202
Its not the data that is damaged (yet) but the performance of the drive has suggested to windows that the drive will fail shortly - chkdsk with no errors just means it has not yet broken. Backup any important data on the drive ASAP - its impossible to say when it will stop working, and data recovery is very expensive, and may be impossible to get everythnig back! If its under warranty, then yes RMA it for a replacement.
Trying to back up my 1.2TB of TV, it's going to take a couple of days but then I'll RMA it. Thanks all!
A couple of days? How are you backing up? This makes me suspect you haven't been backing at all until now.
I'm copying all my files over to another 2TB drive, but I'm doing it slowly. This is the only disk that wasn't backed up with me, but my girlfriend has most of the same TV on an external, so most of it was backed up.
Good to hear. Too many people cram a 2TB drive full of stuff, and never have a back up. They then come on here QQing over a broken hard drive... Sod doing it slowly. Open source drive... ctrl+a.. drag into new drive... switch off monitor... go to bed. Will be done in the morning.
A bit off topic but I picked up my external HD to dust under it the other day and a window appeared saying Nooooo, then when I tried to play a video it was stuttering. Restarted pc and it was fine, are they really that sensitive ??
If your just copying media files, and not system files you shouldn't see this. Only if you're moving files will you run into problems. I've never seen windows pop up a request dialogue for copying a file from a storage drive unless you still have UAC set to nag you all the time.
Before RMAing your drive I can't stress enough how worth it is changing the SATA cable with a new one to check its not that.
Done that, my PC wouldn't even boot because it told me I had to replace the disk, which was a nice little feature I must say (you can override and boot, though).
Up, I've got 2 2Tb drives stuffed to the brim. But I always backup so if one fails I don't have to kill myself.............
