It's time for me to get back to my roots.:D There's been a lot of cardboard box mods, but the level of construction has always been too simple for my tastes. Honestly, the material is as cheap as you can get, why not make something really special with it? -Like, special in the head...
This mod may take some time. The glue is very slow to set up, and a lot of my building material ran off to the recycle bin. I actually started about 3 weeks ago.
So let's build a really kick-butt fire hazard!
-Here's my start on a basic frame. I have two of these motherboards. This one is dead, but I think the other one is OK. Mobo risers are the cut offs from the toad re-mod. I tapped the material with a sharpened stick.:D
    [IMG]
-My tools this time around are quite simple. I shouldn't have to tell anyone how they work. I'm going to use cardboard, some construction paper I found, and flooring glue. I may splurge and use some old rags later too. -No macaroni this time...
    I think...
-Oh, I'm using these high-end clothing clamps during the gluing process. I may also take advantage of anything heavy in my vicinity. (No, not my neighbor...)
-More to come later, for now- "eeek! get it off me!"

Mini-ITX? Looks about the right size. 2 memory slots and 1 PCI, About right. Good start. What kind of cardboard are you using? Multi-ply, waxed one side. POS box ?

Needs some colored cardboard and marking pen graphics - maybe train car tagging style.

    I watch!

I like how you doubled up on the mobo tray, and criss-crossed the grain of the cardboard for added strength. Ingenius!! :thumb:

    Double awesomeness thread
A while ago there was a thread where a few of us were really keen to see some quality cardboard box mods (oxymoron?)
Instead of just seeing them drawn up in sketchup, it would be really cool to see them created!

+1 for perpendicular alginment of the cardboard sheets  I wouldn't have noticed that if Bodd hadn't pointed that out.

Another great feature of cardboard is the vibration absorbing and non-resonating properties :thumb:

/waits for "OMG CARDBOARD IS GOING TO CATCH FIRE NOOB!!111"

Cardboard really is good for structural components. They had some really neat cardboard chairs and furniture in the Museum of Modern Art.
Maybe we should use cardboard for a modder's challenge contest thing.
Cheaps is already giving us ideas. Very nice work.

    Thanks everyone.
@Bod - Good eye. It should be a little brick when finished. I have a whole case of glue.
@John- You know the motherboards I'm using, You shipped them to me.:D The cardboard I'm using is whatever I get my hands on. You should aready be able to see pizza box.:D
@Mvagusta - I have a habit of setting things on fire. When I'm done it should look really awesome with smoke coming out of it.

Looks like a lot of fun. Yoshi DeHerrera did a cardboard PC on TechTV's The Screensavers way back when. Of course it was called a corrugated case mod just to be fancy about it. It was fairly sophisticated IMHO.

    Read about here....

    That would be my queue........

But thinking about it, you had a sufficient air flow, the temps would stay low enough.

Ignore the n00b, he don't know WHAT he's on about :D

Flash point of paper is above the safe operating temperature of any component I can think of that's likely to be in a PC. Unless you have a lot of cardboard dust blowing around (fine flammable dust + fan internals = possible FAE), nothing should catch fire. If you really want to be extra careful, you could line the underside of the motherboard tray with aluminium foil, as long as the standoffs are long enough to prevent shorting.

    What have I started?
@Slipperyskip - Yes, but he still made a box for some reason. :eyebrow: Infinite materials should equal infinite possibilities.
@edzieba - I have the uncanny ability to supply a flashpoint in computers. I've set a metal case on fire. I'll save the aluminum foil for hats.:D
