    Create Monopoly. Check!

    Controlling distribution channels. Check!

    No physical disc or box cost at retail. Check!

    Closed off and internal market for price fixing. Check!

    Charge 3rd party and independent developers to get in on the action. Check!

    Centralize power; get rid of Game Spot, Game, and Destroy 2nd hand market. Check!

    Collect activity data of customers. Check!

    False security. Check!

    You seem to be missing some of the main benefits for Sony. Effectively any branded Playstation device from phones to TV's will be able to play the entire PS catalogue of games and you now have backwards compatibility built cheaply into every device.

    indeed, this is more than likely pocket change for Sony.
    You have to remember that Sony also has serious assets in the Film and Music industries as well as all their high tech interests. the Playstation brand and SCE are but small parts of a massive super corporation
