News Lithium sulphur triples battery life

Researchers at the University of Washington in Canada have come up with a new material for batteries - lithium sulphur - which promises to triple their capacity.

 

Good old carbon nanorods, is there anything they can't do?

I don't know why they're worried about capacity fading, as it didn't stop NiMh becoming popular, and those were terrible at discharging themselves. People rarely use high capacity rechargeable batteries for purposes other than high current demanding applications that will inevitably discharge the battery faster than it could discharge itself in storage.

ya that means the Tesla car will be able to either drive longer (currently 250miles), or be a lot lighter and gain a bit more speed, sweet....

as for the laptop industry and anything else using such battery tech also very awesome, my 9hr EeePC can be like 15 now lol sweet

I hate having to charge my phone and my laptop.
It would be nice to not charge my iPhone twice everyday. With a battery life of almost 13 hours - jeez.
Same with laptops too. Macbook with 15 hours batt??
The questions is "how long does it take to charge up??"

 

So we may be getting gaming laptops that can actually be run on battery, this is good news.

I am thinking we are getting closer to Tesla troopers.

ya its not really a fact yes they are still researching it but considering how much crap that is out there already that may or does harm us, Im not to concerned at this point

I have just joined this site, and am very interested in battery power. I think the point is being missed, if power is generated remotely ( many miles away) from the user much of it is wasted it leaks, but if you had a very very efficient battery you could site filling stations at the base of land based producers i.e. wind and water tubines on a production line thus making full use of the things, for instance I once saw a gag on TV where you could buy at a shop a box of electricity, far fetched? but if it were possible to buy a rechargable, say one months supply for a house and it was say 20 pounds weight and a ft sq.
Not enough use is made of water power for instance simple water wheels every 20 meters or so right accross the river for miles would make great production lines.

 

Forget shrinking the battery. Three times the battery life is the way forward. Smartphones never last a full day on a single charge with reasonable use.

We'll see. If I had 10 seconds extra battery life every time I read about a single technology that was going to dramatically increase battery life I would have probably have 3 times the battery life already.
