FPS Motion Sickness

So I've not played an FPS since... Unreal Tournament 2003(?) ... well for about ten years or so - saw the Talos Principle on steam for cheep the other day and thought - what the hell, looks kin'a fun.

Within five minutes I was hot-flushing, dizzy, nauseous, weak feeling, and generally gack! I didn't have these problems once upon a time with unreal, tournament(s), etcetera.

After a mug of hot sweet earl grey tea and a quiet quarter of an hour I went back and found it has a motion sickness setting in graphic options - I'm obviously not the only person who's been having problems - I let it do its thing but opted out of 3rd person and went 1st person.

Not as bad but after ten minutes I was feeling a bit malaise and coming out of the game, even general browsing (mostly mouse use) continued and continues the unpleasantness.

Any advice? Do I just stick with it and build up a tolerance or are my FPS days over?

Firstly, definitely a 'build your tolerance up' thing! I find that if I haven't played a fast shooty game for a while, I can start to feel giddy.

Have you got a larger screen than before? The more of your vision filled up with screen, the less you can keep track on the real world and the more likely you are to feel ill. The epitome of this is a surround set up.

Be warned: VR is even worse for this...

TotalBiscuit complains about this from time to time. Apparently he is sensitive to this kind of motion sickness. He usually mentions it when there is a narrow field of view in the game and there is no field of view slider. So try increasing the field of view.

I have a 'problem' with games that take control of the camera on a regular basis. If I'm in control I'm generally ok, but as soon as the game takes control (i.e. cut scenes) i'm done. If i play long enough I will feel iffy playing anything FPS or third person. But i must admit the Talos Principle gets me quicker than most, that and Mirrors Edge.

The Talos Principle is really bad for motion sickness. As you saw, it has an entire page of options dedicated to it! I love the game but cannot play it because it will make me throw up and have a headache until I sleep. HL2 was the only game that got me as badly and that was mainly due to the CRT I used. I'm not prone to motion sickness at all, in fact, I never get it whilst travelling. But there's been a handful of games now that just destroy me. I can't be near a computer for a while afterwards as well. I have to take time out and close my eyes or it will linger for hours.

Don't worry about your FPS days being over, you just chose a game that's made lots of people ill even when they've never had motion sickness from a game before!

That...

and age? I know that in my teens/early twenties I would ride a rollercoaster 10x in a row, and at thirty I got (and still get) sick within 2-3 minutes.

I used to get this when the motion blur option was on in different games. Usually switching that off fixed it for me.

Old school Myst was unplayable for me.

For me, a narrow field of view is always the culprit, if the game doesn't have an FOV slider or the ability to edit the graphics config file then I'd have to give it a miss.

Input/output delay may also be a factor, as well as how quick a game is responding in general. There's a bit in Metro 2033 (one of my all time favourite games) where you carry a child on your back and to simulate this the game delays your mouse input by a fraction of a second and I think it also messes around with mouse acceleration settings. I felt quite ill after playing through the (thankfully) brief section!
