reaffirm my choice of SSD

I'll cut to the chase - is the Samsung 960 evo still the go-to option for SSDs?

My requirements are:

£120 or less
250GB or larger
m.2 if possible
Available from Amazon [as it'll be bought with vouchers].

The 960 ticks all the right boxes, but just getting second opinions before pulling the trigger.

There are actually two competitors available at the capacity relevant for the budget.

The Corsair MP500 and the PNY CS2030.

Which one is the fastest? They trade blows from one bench to the next with no clear winner, so ultimately it just comes down to which one is the cheapest of the three and which brand you trust your data with.

I'd buy the Samsung 960 EVO if it were me.

Just to check - what board is it you're intending to use it with?

ASUS Z97 Pro, so it supports NVMe

Sure I could cheap out and get a sata model but that means finding cables and screws to mount it in the case and... well... **** that noise...

And i did look at the PNY and a Plextor, but the Samsung was the cheapest by a fair margin.

Does it have to be an NVMe m.2 or would a SATA m.2 do instead?

The Plextor M8P has the same problem as the WD Black and the Intel 600P, slow write speeds, all three of them are only worth it if you get them at a very good price.

Only the PNY and Corsair ones can compete for performance, but price matters and if the Samsung is the cheapest there is no reason to opt for either PNY or Corsair.

I'd rather it be an nvme SSD, though if i could get a 500GB sata model for my budget i might consider it.

Prob the best deal around on the cheap M.2 Sata ones:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-MX3.../dp/B01L80DH4G
525GB from a reputable brand for £137.

Sadly £120 is a hard limit that I can't go beyond.

Were it not for the vouchers I'd have to make do with my current arrangement of running from a Linux live usb image and hoping i can still retrieve stuff off my knackered HDD should i need to.

and £120 doesn't even come close to fixing the other things wrong with my pc so a SSD is probably the most efficient use of it.

I couldn't get my Z97 board to recognise a SATA M.2, so I'd stick with NVMe.

Nope, I have £120 of amazon vouchers and that's it. If it's more than £120 or not on amazon, it's not happening.

EDIT: and the humour has gone right over my head... derp...

Sure, i'd love a 2TB SSD, i'd love a lot of things... but right now my pc is held together with wishful thinking and compromises... as i said, were it not for these vouchers falling in my lap, i'd be running of this live usb for the forseeable.

Haha no worries. On a more on-topic note, in your position I would 100% go for the 960 from Amazon if you can get it in budget

Seems firm to me. I found the Corsair and pny to be a little squishy.

Haha - certainly is I'm amazed that there are 2TB NVMe drives commercially available (i.e. readily stocked by suppliers) - who has the money to buy them?! Well other than Jinq I suppose
