For the record, this method totally works, for Xcom at least. Am now playing the same save files on seperate PCs.

Sweet. That's doing exactly what I do but using a different extension to create your symbolic links.

Also for the record, back up your saves on a seperate file. wouldn't want anyone losing their 100 hour Barbie at the Mall game saves...

I've been using the above for a few weeks now. Primarily for everything that isn't backed up by the steam cloud, but probably still relevant here?
Sync & Link is basically what is outlined above - just automated and requiring no form of wizardry. I finally have a use for my Skydrive account, though it also supports Dropbox & Drive (or even FTP)
For those games that it doesn't directly support for sync & link, you can generally just back them up your preferred cloud folder instead.
