I have been trying to get my Samsung Galaxy S 5.0 to connect to Samsung Kies so I can see if it's running the latest OS and possible update it (not sure if I want to risk updating it mind you, dont want to brick it) but it refuses to connect.

I have tried lots of possible fixes but nothing has worked, anyone had any experience on this?

Yes I have had the same connection issues, it is just a rubbish piece of software. I uninstalled and reinstalled but it is still picky about when it decides to connect to your phone.
I usually just keep disconnecting it the reconnecting it.
I have updated my S3 via Kies (when it did connect) and no issues.
However every time I start up I get a message the Kies has downloaded the latest update, despite the fact that it was already downloaded and installed.

For phone to PC connection (excluding updates) Airdroid is way better imo.

Had this issue with a Galaxy SII and it turned out it needed the original USB cable to work at all. No idea why that was the case, but it's worth mentioning I guess.

I've had about a 5% success rate with making Kies work with my phone and a 0% success rate with my tablet... Worst piece of junk I have the misfortune of having installed on my computer imo...

Think it's going to get uninstalled to be honest, I was a bit nervous of updating the firmware as it was but if the software is that flakey I don't think I can trust it even if it did manage to connect.

Thanks for the idea Yslen but it was the cable that came in the box so I think I can rule that out.

Update via the phone itself rather than pc update.

    Settings>About>Update.

Use wifi and all downloads and installs fine.

I did the latest update last week.

Unfortunately there isn't an update option in the about section.

    It's an S, right?
I've got an S+, and it doesn't seem Samsung is offering any upgrades.

That's probably the case but I read somehwere you can use 2.3.3 but I'm probably wrong, my daughter seems happy with it as it is. I was only going to try to get it updated as she can't use team speak with the OS version she has.

Have a look on xda forums for your model. Got to general section and select stock roms.

They will advise you to use "odin" to flash

(All instructions and downloads are there)

Dont use kies. It hardly ever works correctly.

Have been doing this for years with my Samsung S2. On JellyBean 4.1.2 atm.

Can only find posts referring to the stock rom, I don't know what version is possible, new to this and somewhat lost.

    This is what we have

If you go to system setting-about device and quote the model number listed there (not all similar devices have the same number. ...)

I will see what there is

Endless connection issues with my Galaxy S3. Complete pain in the ass.

Ended up using Airdroid instead for file transfers and such.
Luckily for me the last time I managed to get Kies to connect to check for updates the update seemed to add over the air updates to Android, which mean Kies never need darken my door again.

    As for getting Kies working.
    Well:
    • Uninstall everything Kies related (inc drivers).
    • Restart the computer.
    • Download the latest version of Kies.
    • Disconnect your computer from the internet (can help as it should disable Windows automatically looking for alternate drivers on the web).
    • Install Kies following the instructions for when to connect religiously.
    • Hope for the best that it might connect once so you can update.
    • Mess around with USB debugging because that might help.
    • Find that doesn't help.
    • Repeat all of the above thinking it might help.
    • Waste time trying various other things.
    • :wallbash:
    • Give up.
